Tyndale University — Provost and Chief Academic Officer

Tyndale University invites inquiries and applications for the position of Provost and Chief Academic Officer. The appointment of the new Provost is to take effect on July 1, 2021. 

Tyndale University: Tyndale is a Christian university that prepares leaders for work in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors, ministry and the global mission of the church. Tyndale offers fully accredited programs in a wide range of disciplines at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Currently, there are over 1,600 students representing over 40 denominations and 60 ethnic backgrounds and over 13,000 alumni. Founded in 1894, Tyndale is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

POSITION PURPOSE
As Chief Academic Officer, the Provost reports directly to the President and holds responsibility for achieving the academic institutional strategic vision in consultation with Academic Deans and faculty. Additionally, the Provost oversees supplementary academic support services that include the Library, Office of the Registrar, Office of Distributed Learning and the Open Learning Centres. The Provost is responsible for providing innovative leadership related to all academic activities in both the undergraduate and seminary programs and ensures the alignment of mission, vision and educational philosophy. The Provost will promote excellence in teaching and learning, support faculty scholarship and development, participate in the cultivation of a Christian learning community whose actions and attitudes reflect the values, faith formation and intellectual rigour that Tyndale is nurturing in its long- term plan. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
As part of the President’s Cabinet the Provost, together with the Deans, ensures that Tyndale has the appropriate mix of academic programs, people, strategies, plans, and systems in place to effectively serve students, resource faculty, ensure academic excellence, and be responsive to a rapidly changing and competitive educational and societal context. The academic portfolio is diverse, ranging from meeting with students to carrying out the duties of the President in his/her absence. The Provost serves as an advisor to the Board of Governors, in consultation with the President. 

Leadership and Administration 

  • In conjunction with the President, Cabinet, Faculty and Senate, continue the development of a vision for academic growth. 
  • Nurture goals and priorities for Undergraduate Studies (UGS) and Seminary in line with Tyndale’s overall mission and the Strategic Plan. 
  • Provide leadership, management coaching and strategic direction, including establishing, implementing, and monitoring achievement in integration and research. 
  • Develop, motivate, lead, and mentor Deans, department heads and faculty. 
  • Serve as the Chair of Senate, the Promotion and Tenure Committee. 
  • Chair and/or serve on other committees as assigned. 
  • Serve as the Chair of the Tyndale Academic Press. 
  • Serve as a member of Cabinet, enabling the President, the Board of Governors, and Cabinet to make timely, informed, responsible, and creative decisions that optimize the generation, development and use of institutional resources (financial, physical, and human), manage risk appropriately, and maintain transparency, as appropriate.

Community Participation and Development

  • Work together with the Academic Deans in providing excellent professional development opportunities for faculty. 
  • Create and sustain the infrastructure and environment required to facilitate, nurture, and support research excellence. 
  • Mentor faculty and guide them in their development in teaching, research and service. 
  • Represent the President, as requested. 
  • Lead special strategic projects, task forces, research at the request of the President. 
  • Establish and nurture collegial connections with other academic institutions and organizations in both the public and private sector of higher education. 
  • Oversee partnerships with other academic institutions and faith-based organizations. 
  • Elevate the visibility and image of Tyndale through public speaking, networking and constituency relations. 
  • Guide and support faculty development, including recruitment and appointment, promotion and tenure processes. 
  • Chair and assist with setting agendas for Senate and All-Faculty Meetings as well as serve in other academic administration responsibilities. 
  • Working alongside the Deans, oversee academic accreditations and institutional self-studies to ensure quality, uniformity and consistency. 
  • Function as the conduit to outside accrediting agencies. 
  • Work with the Academic Deans to ensure the reviewing of curriculum, the development of new programs and the interfacing of both the undergraduate and the Seminary/graduate studies programs to ensure the maximizing of resources and mutual cooperation of the schools so as to fulfill Tyndale’s overall mission.

  • Substantial leadership experience in higher education administration

  • The capacity to work effectively with external communities, such as government agencies and faith-based constituencies 
  • An accomplished academic leader with proven experience with budgeting and human resource related matters 
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed research publications consistent with a tenured university position and recognized academic status, preferred 
  • Proven ability in building new academic programs

  • Availability with fluctuating non-standard business hours
