Pennsylvania State University — Assistant or Associate Professor

Assistant or Associate Professor

The Department of Sociology and Criminology in the College of the Liberal Arts invites applications for a tenure-line position to begin fall of 2021, with flexibility.

We seek an outstanding scholar who adds breadth to one or more of the department's existing research strengths (https://sociology.la.psu.edu/research) and whose research and teaching focus primarily on documenting, understanding, and reducing substance abuse and addiction or their consequences. Preference will be given to candidates who can contribute to Penn State's School of Public Policy (https://publicpolicy.psu.edu/). We anticipate filling this position at the rank of Assistant Professor, though if warranted the rank of Associate Professor may be considered.

Candidates for Associate Professor should have:

  • An outstanding publication record
  • A commitment to securing external funding
  • A track record of excellence in teaching and mentoring students.

Duties will include a combination of teaching, research, and service, based on the candidate's qualifications.

Candidates for Assistant Professor should:

  • Show significant research and teaching promise
  • Complete their Ph.D. by the time of appointment.

Duties will include a combination of teaching, research, and service, based on the candidate's qualifications.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable and diverse campus community. Penn State is committed to and accountable for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its forms. We embrace individual uniqueness, foster a culture of inclusion that supports both broad and specific diversity initiatives, leverage the educational and institutional benefits of diversity, and engage all individuals to help them thrive. We value inclusion as a core strength and an essential element of our public service mission.

This position is part of The Pennsylvania State University's recently launched Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse (CCSA); https://CombatSubstanceAbuse.ssri.psu.edu, which seeks colleagues whose research interests and expertise fit within the broad areas of pathways to addiction, criminal justice, and/or spillover effects of substance abuse to families and communities. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will:

  • Work actively with other members of the consortium to build a powerful inter-disciplinary community of scholars focused on illuminating the multi-level processes that give rise to addiction;
  • Design, implement, evaluate, and disseminate novel, evidence-based approaches for prevention of, treatment for, and recovery from addiction;
  • Identify and ameliorate the effects of substance misuse on individuals, families and communities;
  • Translate research findings into evidence-based practices, programs and policies.

The candidate chosen for the position will be linked to resources from several of Penn State's centers and institutes, including the Population Research Institute (http://www.pop.psu.edu/), the Penn State Administrative Data Accelerator (http://www.accelerator.psu.edu/), and the Penn State Addiction Center for Translation (https://research.med.psu.edu/addiction/).
