Syracuse University — Newhouse Chair, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications

Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications seeks a scholar with international standing for the position of Newhouse Professor, an endowed chair established at the founding of the School.

We are seeking a colleague who can examine the evolving construct of bias in communications and establish a leading research program that explicates the formation, manifestation and evolution of biases in the media broadly defined. Understanding that in the 21st century, bias can arise in new ways, from data-powered algorithms to transient social networks, we are seeking a scholar eager to lead in new directions and break new ground. A wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches will be considered. The ability to secure grant funding is highly desirable.

The position is well-supported with a significant research budget and travel funds included. Qualified applicants will have a publication and citation record appropriate for an Endowed Chair, with an exceptional ongoing research agenda. In addition to publishing impactful research, the successful candidate will also have a vision for how The Newhouse Professor will lead the national conversation about the social challenges and opportunities in addressing bias in the public sphere.

S/he will have a track record of collegial collaboration, considerable experience mentoring graduate students, and advising doctoral dissertations and Master’s theses. A Ph.D. is required. The Newhouse Professor will have a teaching load appropriate for a productive researcher, and the anticipated start date is August 22, 2021.
