St. John’s College — Assistant Director of Admissions / Assistant Director of Admissions for Diversity Recruitment

The Assistant Director supports the efforts of the Admissions Office by managing an assigned territory, implementing recruitment strategies, communicating with student prospects, building relationships with high schools, managing inquiries and applications, and supervising the tasks of student workers. This work includes travel, outstanding customer service, and a dedication to continuous improvement of St. John’s College through recruitment efforts.

For the right candidate hired as Assistant Director of Admissions for Diversity Recruitment, the Assistant Director also develops and implement specific recruitment strategies and communication plans to encourage inquiries, applications, and the enrollment of students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Tasks will include but not limited to:

  • Review, assess, and implement recruitment strategies for a specific territory or student populations, including statistical analysis and plans to achieve both short-term and long-term recruitment goals.
  • Develop and implement specific recruitment strategies and communication plans targeting a specific territory.
  • In conjunction with the overall recruitment strategy, organize and independently conduct 8-14 weeks of travel. Arrange and conduct interviews, meetings with alumni, and school visits.
  • Serve as primary contact for prospective students, parents, counselors, and teachers; effectively manage the student application process.
  • Articulate effectively the goals of liberal education and the St. John’s program in particular.

In addition to the above tasks, the Diversity Recruitment role will include:

  • Developing partnerships with CBOs, NPOs, and other institutions to improve college access for underrepresented student populations.
  • Identify key markets for students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Develop and implement specific recruitment strategies and communication plans targeting students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Assistance including, but not limited to, service opportunities, media (for publications, pictures, video, etc.), and networking opportunities in existing and new markets for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Experience & Skills:

  • Two years of professional experience in admissions, project management, marketing or another related field; preference given to candidates with experience working in a diverse environment and/or with students from underrepresented backgrounds; preference given to candidates with more experience.
  • BA/BS degree required. A St. John’s or other liberal arts college graduate preferred.
  • Significant levels of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and can be of a personal or sensitive nature.
  • Fostering sound relationships with schools and/or individuals is required.
  • Must be able to counsel and influence students and parents with regard to education, admissions and financial aid.
  • Must be competent at program/special project management.
  • Must be organized and computer literate (MS Office preferred), and able to quickly learn admissions software (Slate experience preferred)
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are necessary.
  • Preference given to candidates who can read, write, and speak Spanish.

This role may be required travel up to eight weeks in the fall and up to six weeks in the spring, with some nights and weekend work. Must have a valid driver’s license and clean credit report.
