California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) seeks an energetic, experienced, and transformative leader to assume the role of Associate Vice President, Communications and Marketing. They have retained BRYANT GROUP to manage the search.

The Associate Vice President, Communications, and Marketing (AVPCM) position requires a dynamic and collaborative leader responsible for creating, managing, and assessing the University’s strategic communications and marketing programs. The AVPCM reports to Dr. Thomas Parham, University President.

This position serves as a campus leader who works with other divisions and academic colleges. It is responsible for leading an integrated, comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and proactive communications department that generates high-quality, professional content for all university channels and presents a consistent, professional, and mission-driven public image of the institution. 

CSU Dominguez Hills is a major university for Los Angeles and Orange Counties. It offers 46 undergraduate majors, 23 master’s degrees, and multiple certificate and credential programs. Formed after the 1965 Watt’s Rebellion, it is rooted in social justice and the student population is among the most diverse in the country. Nearly 90% of the student body are people of color. Hispanic students make up 64% of the student body; that is the 3rd highest in the state. African American students comprise 14% (the highest percentage of any public university in California), and 10.8% of the students identify as Asian/Pacific Islander.

The Associate Vice President, Communications and Marketing (AVPCM) will integrate the needs of the Office of the President and the University to raise the visibility, develop recognition, and enhance the image of CSUDH to the campus community and external audiences. This includes leadership, direction, and evaluation of operations and productivity for all marketing and publications, including enrollment management marketing, brand management, and media and constituent relations. 

This position manages a professional staff of ten, two administrative personnel, two to three student assistants, and one to two consultants.

Some Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of branding, marketing, public relations, and communications practices, principles, and techniques related to an academic or similar institution.
  • Effective supervisory and organizational management skills, including budgets and leading teams to meet institutional objectives.
  • Strong leadership experience in the development and implementation of university marketing and communications.
  • Effective public speaking skills and media networking on a local, regional, and national level.
  • Strong attention to detail and context.
  • Detail and communicate simply, clearly, and effectively using a high level of written and oral communication skills.
  • Detect trends, make recommendations for innovative change, and implement solutions to complex problems that require ingenuity and creativity. Research and evaluate alternatives and determine the most effective course of action.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and least eight years of progressively responsible experience in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Public Administration, Marketing, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of branding, marketing, public relations, and communication practices, principles, and techniques related to an academic or similar institution.
  • Ability to quickly understand the University’s key priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree or terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a field of expertise. 
  • Five years of supervisory/managerial experience in communications, marketing, or a related field. Three to five years of demonstrable acumen and experience in digital marketing.
