The Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for the position of Director of the School of Social Work (SSW) at the rank of Associate/Full Professor, with a term commencing July 1, 2021. The SSW is ranked 25th in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report “Best Graduate Schools.” The school is a vibrant community of active scholars with world-class faculty who lead five centers and nine research offices, including the Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center (SIRC), a Specialized Center (U54) funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The SSW generates almost $10 million annually in research funding and faculty are consistently among the most highly published scholars in their fields. Faculty expertise includes strengths in health disparities, gender-based violence, behavioral health, human rights and social justice, child and adolescent wellbeing, community-based participatory research, and health and wellbeing among Indigenous and Latinx populations on the Southern border. The SSW recently completed a strategic plan to guide future growth and to maintain its upward trajectory; faculty and staff actively participate in four workgroups to operationalize and implement the school’s strategic plan.

The SSW offers BSW, MSW, and Ph.D. degree programs along with several certificate programs (e.g. domestic violence, Latinx cultural competency, integrative health). The school has a fully online MSW program (in Advanced Generalist Practice) and a fully online BA program (in Community, Advocacy, and Social Policy). The SSW’s in-person and online programs collectively have over 2,200 students, with growing enrollment in the 2020 academic year. Due to COVID-19 and to assist our students in preparing for social work practice in the 21st century (e.g., telehealth), the SSW has harnessed the considerable technological infrastructure of ASU to offer hybrid learning models and innovative training opportunities.

There are 39 tenure/tenure-track faculty, 38 fixed-term faculty, and 126 university staff and classified staff in the SSW, who collectively are committed to excellence in education, research, and service to the community. The school is a leader in the area of culturally responsive practice, particularly with regard to racially/ethnically diverse communities of the Southwest and health disparities. The SSW is located at the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus, close to many federal, state, and municipal agencies, social service providers, and health care partners. In addition to the Downtown campus, we offer our programs on ASU’s campuses in Tucson, Northwest Phoenix, and Yuma; we also offer SSW courses on the Tempe and Polytechnic campuses.

Job Responsibilities
The Director is a member of the leadership team of the college, has general executive responsibility for all aspects of the school’s activities, and is accountable on all matters to the faculty, Dean of the college, and the central administration of Arizona State University.

The Director’s primary job responsibilities are to ensure that:

  • Faculty hiring, mentoring, promotion and tenure are carried out at the highest standards of excellence
  • SSW’s Associate Directors and staff are mentored and supported
  • The curriculum is academically rigorous, innovative, and responsive to the needs of students and the community
  • Collaborative relationships are built and strengthened with the local and global community
  • Budgetary decision-making and execution are driven by sound principles, consultation, and accountability
  • Externally funded research is fully supported at all stages, including conceptualization, application, and post-award
  • The academic profile of the SSW at ASU, in the community, in the profession, nationally, and internationally is advanced
  • Academic connections with other schools in the Watts College and across the ASU are encouraged and enhanced
  • ASU’s commitment to diversity is operationalized in the SSW through concrete action items designed with input from students, faculty, staff and the local community

Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or a related public service field
  • A record of scholarship that will allow the candidate to qualify for tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor
  • Demonstrated administrative experience or ability to initiate, develop and coordinate programs pursuant to Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation standards

Desired Qualifications

  • Administrative experience at the MSW or BSW level in a CSWE-accredited institution
  • MSW from a CSWE-accredited program
  • Two years post-MSW practice experience
  • Established record of teaching effectiveness with diverse student populations
  • Demonstrated success in developing and enhancing relationships with a variety of internal and external constituents
  • Experience of writing an accreditation self-study and/or guiding a social work program through the accreditation process
  • Established record of leading and managing faculty and staff
  • Enthusiasm to serve diverse communities in the Southwest
