Oakland University — Assistant Professor of Theatre – Costume Design

Job Description: The Department of Theatre within The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at Oakland University seeks a vibrant artist/educator for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Costume Design. The successful candidate must be dedicated to teaching students in a rigorous BFA setting and to positive collaboration with fellow artists/faculty within an integrated department and school. We seek an artist/educator who brings creative teaching solutions for in-person and hybrid courses, while being able to respond with flexibility to the long-term effects of COVID on the theatre discipline. Courses for instruction may include (but are not limited to): Costume Design, Costume History, Stage Make-up, Costume Construction, Essentials of Design, and potential Special Topics within the candidate’s area of expertise. Responsibilities will also include designing costumes for at least one production in our mainstage season, advising undergraduate costume designers and make-up designers on mainstage productions and our children’s touring show. Tenure-track faculty are expected to serve on School and departmental committees in addition to maintaining active professional scholarship. All faculty are expected to help foster the transition of graduating students to the professional world, and special attention will be given to candidates with strong ideas for early career opportunities. University teaching experience or the ability to demonstrate potential teaching effectiveness is highly desired. Finally, candidates must demonstrate experience with or a commitment to diversity and inclusion. 

Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate will have the following qualifications: MFA in Theatre (Costume Design) or comparable degree, plus professional experience; or a master’s degree or BFA with extensive professional experience.
