Job Summary

The Teaching and Learning Lab (TLL) is seeking a Senior Instructional Coach for Anti-Racist Pedagogy to help lead our continuous improvement efforts in anti-racist teaching practices at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). Building on work begun in 2011, HGSE recently launched an ambitious multi-year Anti-Racist Teaching and Advising (ARTA) Initiative that combines required faculty professional learning with differentiated optional opportunities. The Senior Instructional Coach for Anti-Racist Pedagogy will be a key part of this new ARTA initiative, serving on the planning and governance committee, helping to design and facilitate professional development for faculty and graduate-student teaching fellows (TFs), conducting individual faculty coaching sessions, creating and curating relevant instructional resources, and connecting with other HGSE departments to help coordinate institutional efforts regarding anti-racist pedagogy. This position will also contribute to our evolving Master’s Program Redesign process, an endeavor aimed at establishing a new standard for training education professionals that, among other things, incorporates anti-oppressive competencies throughout the curriculum. Opportunities may arise to teach in our Degree Programs and / or Programs in Professional Education. This role will report to the Associate Director for Instructional Support and Development (ISD).

Job-Specific Responsibilities
Duties Include:

Facilitating professional learning:

  • Collaborating with other members of ARTA to design and lead all-faculty professional development around anti-racist teaching practices on topics including but not limited to: building relationships with all students, de-colonizing the curriculum, creating a brave and supportive classroom environment, employing anti-racist pedagogical strategies, undoing white supremacy culture in classroom practice, and identifying and repairing harm.
  • Help facilitate ongoing differentiated professional learning communities such as Conversations about Race and Racism, a faculty group that uses consultations to explore and learn from classroom dilemmas of practice related to race and racism at HGSE, as well as race-based affinity groups, as appropriate.
  • Coach individual faculty members on their growth as anti-racist educators.
  • Design and lead periodic trainings for TFs.
  • Improve instructional resources for faculty members by expanding our curated web resources, creating resource guides, crafting newsletter articles that showcase innovative practices happening at HGSE, and exploring other mediums and modes for providing compelling supports to improve teaching practice.
  • Contribute to the broader Harvard community and the field of higher education’s anti-racist teaching practices through crafting and sharing pedagogical resources, collaborating on action research, supporting our Programs in Professional Education, and potentially presenting at conferences.
  • Opportunities may arise to teach on topics related to anti-racist pedagogy in our Degree Programs and / or Programs on
    Professional Education.

Programmatic leadership:

  • Help lead the Anti-Racist Teaching and Advising Initiative, collaborating with the ARTA leadership committee to craft and execute the initiative’s strategy.
  • Engage in Ed.M. Redesign work, including helping to build out the Equity and Opportunity Foundations experiences and helping to integrate our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging competencies throughout our evolving curriculum.
  • Collaborate with other departments at HGSE and across Harvard to share anti-racist teaching resources and innovations.

Additional duties:

  • Serve as a resource for HGSE staff members on issues surrounding race and equity-focused instructional practice.
  • Manage graduate student employees as needed for various projects.
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

Basic Qualifications
Master’s degree, a minimum 5 years of education-related work experience, and experience with anti-racist teaching practices. Previous experience leading conversations about race and racism in an academic setting.

This is a full-time, two-year term position with the possibility of renewal. Once Harvard resumes regular operations, this position will no longer be remote and work will be performed on campus in Cambridge, MA.
