Colleges and Universities Announces the Hiring of Seven African Americans to Administrative Posts

Travis Johnson was named chief information officer at South Carolina State University. He is the former director of information technology at Denmark Technical College and CIO at Benedict College and Newberry College.

Johnson is a graduate of Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina, where he majored in computer science. He is completing his master’s degree in information technology/database management.

Angela Poole has been named vice president for administration and finance at Talladega College in Alabama. She had been serving as a managing consultant for AMP Expert Solutions. Earlier, Dr. Poole served as senior vice president for business affairs and chief financial officer at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Dr. Poole earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a Ph.D. in educational leadership at Florida A&M University. She also holds a master’s degree in accountancy from Florida State University.

Nate Tarver has been named associate vice president and chief of police for the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Since 2017, he has served as chief of police at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. He served on the Oklahoma City Police Department for more than a quarter century.

Born and raised in Tulsa, Tarver earned his bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Oklahoma. He holds a master’s degree in criminal justice management and administration from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Deborah Alston is the new senior director for alumni relations and advancement services at Virginia Union Univerity. Alston has been an employee at the university for more than 33 years. She has held the role of director of prospect research and gifts management since 2010.

Alston is a graduate of Virginia Union University, where she majored in accounting.

Shirelle Briscoe was appointed assistant vice president for transfer and general student advocacy at Bowie State University in Maryland. She has been serving as assistant vice president for undergraduate studies in the Division of Academic Affairs. She was previously a member of the faculty of the department of communications and the department of teaching, learning & professional development.

Dr. Briscoe holds a bachelor’s degree in business management and a master’s degree in organizational communication from Bowie State Univerity. She earned an educational doctorate at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Thandabantu B. Maceo is the new vice president for strategic enrollment management and marketing at Franklin College in Indiana. He was vice president and consultant for the enrollment marketing services division of Ruffalo Noel Levitz, providing enrollment consulting services to more than 45 campus partners.

Maceo earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Xavier University in Cincinnati. He holds an MBA from Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio.

Brooke H. Jones has been named chief investment officer at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She was managing director of investments for the in-house investment team at the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Jones is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she double majored in business and international studies. She holds an MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
