Job Description Summary:
The Student Success Coach and Coordinator of Diversity and Inclusion For Students will work with all TRIO Student Support Services students but will focus specifically on the needs of the program's students of color, specifically the needs of the program's African-American male population. The mission for this role is to retain and graduate students whom may be at-risk for non-completion (first-generation students, students of low-income, as well as students with documented disabilities) as well as identify any gaps in equity, diversity, or opportunity for our students and then to work with the proper stakeholders to address these issues using an educational framework.

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Behavioral Sciences, or other relevant area. • Minimum of 2 years working with under-represented students. • Ability to maintain a varied work schedule during critical periods sometimes requiring evening, Saturday, and Sunday work hours, dependent upon departmental need. Occasional travel.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Human Relations, Cultural Studies or other relevant area with an emphasis on research and/or program development. • Familiarity with federally funded programs such as TRIO Student Support Services.

Other Information:
• Develops coordinated consistent marketing and brand messages to recruit new TRIO SSS students. Incorporates social media, networking tools, and other techniques and technologies as needed to meet membership requirements. Strengthens partnerships with both internal and external organizations as well as the overall reputation of the program by defining, promoting, and marketing benefits of TRIO SSS participation. • Works with the Director of TRIO SSS to coordinate and advertise programming for current TRIO students: workshops, college visits, cultural events, etc. May also lead workshops and/or facilitate the delivery of academic success programming (time management, organizational skills, note-taking, test-taking, SMART goals, etc.) Will help to develop programming to celebrate student success while still meeting grant’s objectives. • Academic Warning Interventionist: Creates a plan of action to get students whom have received Academic Warnings back on track. This role requires creative and contemporary thinking which will both attract and engage students. Creative/alternative approaches to student success (while still grant compliant) are encouraged. Examples: Study Tables, Wake-Up Calls, etc. • Act as liaison between Student Life and Academics: assists in getting the student to meet with TRIO SSS advisor. Essentially, the Student Success Coach will coach the student on how to address the “life” problems causing the academic problems and the TRIO SSS Advising Team will help student find the correct academic path. • Refer TRIO SSS students out to other campus resources as appropriate: Road Runner Kitchen, SMC Concerns, Counseling, etc. If student is involved in a campus issue, he or she may ask the Student Success Coach to accompany him or her to the hearing as a non-biased third party, active listener. • Develop new programs geared towards SMC’s minority populations. For example, a black male leadership program with objectives that differ but complement SMC’s Black Student Union, etc. • Assist with campus-wide initiative such as EDUC 120, New Student Orientation, Welcome Week, etc. • Conduct research and propose programming related to the success of minority students and possibly other cohorts of at-risk students. • Host open office hours for all SMC students. • Serve on various College committees: Diversity Committee, Retention and Student Engagement Committee, Academic Intervention Team, etc. • Commitment to providing a high level of service and working in a collaborative team environment. • High degree of professionalism: ability to work with individuals at all levels at the College. • Strong attention to detail. • Ability to handle confidential information with utmost discretion. • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. • Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously set priorities, and meet tight deadlines. • The duties listed in this job description are not all-inclusive, but a list of the major responsibilities.
