Job Summary
The Dean of Students reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and provides vision and oversight for the Dean of Students Office and other areas that promote student engagement. Serve as the institution's primary student advocate. Oversee University's response to student care and well-being, student conduct and community standards, and other support services. Serve as a liaison and advocate for students of concern through the development of student centered services, policies, and resources. Lead Student Affairs support of and advocacy for student engagement events such as demonstrations, protests and other student events. Participate in development and facilitation of programming and educational initiatives, identify systemic gaps in services and barriers to student success, and work collaboratively to develop strategies to address issues.


  • Perform related duties as assigned to support the mission of the University
  • Assure that there is administrative after hours 'on-call' coverage for student emergencies
  • Serve as liaison in student non-academic issues with other students, faculty, and staff
  • Maintain effective partnerships external to the Division of Student Affairs with key departments including, but not limited to, Academic Affairs, GSU Police Department, Title IX Office, and Office of Legal Affairs
  • Identify and collaborate to develop appropriate outreach and services for special populations including, but not limited to, students who are homeless, food insecure, or from the foster care system
  • Support the mission of the University and the Division through development of departmental strategic plans that support student learning and operational outcomes. Incorporate and implement appropriate assessment strategies to measure outcomes
  • Participate in university-wide events, including residence hall openings, Orientation, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, athletic events, general student events, Commencement and others as appropriate
  • Lead coordinated support for student demonstrations, protests, and other planned events on campus. Communicate knowledge and explanation of university policies, inclusive excellence, and free speech principles to students and the university community
  • Provide timely and concise data collection and reports as needed by the division and the university and assure that sensitive student information is reported in student conduct database
  • Provide educational programming as appropriate
  • Serve as the committee lead for the Mass Care Team and contribute to strategies for emergency preparedness as related to students
  • Supervise, develop and evaluate performance of all direct reports
  • Serve on divisional and university-wide committees and task forces
  • Provide consultation and serve as a referral resource for faculty, staff, students, parents, and families
  • Oversee and direct implementation and evaluation of the University's crisis intervention response and Behavioral Assessment Team along with policies, procedures, and prevention efforts pertaining to student care and well-being and student crisis intervention
  • Oversee and direct student conduct and community standards and assure that all policies, procedures and prevention efforts are consistent with best practice and are developmental in nature
  • Assist in creating campus-wide policies, programs, and services that support student success and assure consistent policy implementation across campus locations
  • Serve as officer for student appeals in reference to rulings of University Judicial Board, Hearing Officer, University Judicial Officer on Armstrong and Liberty Center campuses
  • Oversee administration and human resources functions, including budget development and resource allocation, of Dean of Students' Office on the Statesboro and Armstrong campus locations
  • Oversee grant administration for TRIO and SSS, including budget development, and assure goals are met and programs are in compliance with federal program requirements
  • Assure processes in place to address student concerns and complaints as they relate to non-academic issues and that such concerns are addressed in a timely manner

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements

  • Master's degree

Required Experience

  • Seven or more years of progressive experience in higher education
  • Experience supervising professional staff members
  • Experience dynamically engaging with diverse student populations in co-curricular spaces and events

Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Maxient or similar software solutions

Preferred Educational Qualifications

  • Ph.D, Ed.D, or terminal degree in a relevant discipline

Preferred Experience

  • Ten or more years of progressive experience in higher education
  • Experience with strategic planning and assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes
  • Experience with a student care team or behavioral intervention team
  • Previous experience at a multi-campus institution

  • Understanding of emerging issues in higher education, particularly in student services
  • Strong working knowledge of higher education legal issues including FERPA, ADA, Title IX, free speech principles, and Clery
  • Understanding of procedures and willingness to follow University policies to meet institutional goals
  • Adhere to University policies and procedures to meet Institutional goals and support University's mission for student success
