The California College of the Arts (CCA) is seeking a multi-skilled individual with a strong background in product and project management to help lead CCA's highly collaborative Web and Mobile Services team.

CCA's web team utilizes a user-centered approach to create simple, elegant solutions to address complex problems for the CCA community. The team works on a variety of sites and services, providing various levels of support from direct design and development to tactical and strategic consultation as appropriate to the priorities of the college.

The team's primary focus is the design and development of a cutting-edge intranet and portal. The CCA Portal is at the heart of the college online ecosystem, simplifying, aggregating, and unifying the digital campus – providing a personalized dashboard; a repository of institutional knowledge; and people, resource and service directories for the entire community.

The Associate Director (AD) is responsible for the day to day project and team management. The team consists of three developers, a Knowledge Manager, one or more work-study students, and, at times, additional team members from inside and outside the department. The AD leads sprint planning; acting as Scrum master using a loose Agile methodology that focuses on flexibility and results.

The Associate Director and the Sr. Director work closely with stakeholders and end-users, ensuring that the Portal and other projects closely align with CCA's priorities. The AD develops project strategy and product definition including setting goals and priorities, researching and documenting requirements, and defining and communicating project plans.

The Associate Director works with the Knowledge Manager to create a content strategy for the Portal that is closely aligned with the main college website (CCA.edu) and other college sites and communication platforms. The AD assists the Knowledge Manager to manage Portal content; training, wrangling, and providing editorial guidance for the many groups, teams, and individuals responsible for creating and maintaining Portal content.

The AD is a strong, creative technical and design manager. The AD has a solid design sense, a firm understanding of web and mobile technologies, and experience with digital marketing tools and trends. The AD is driven by the desire to provide a delightful and intuitive online experience for the CCA community.

The AD must have excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Product Management – 35%

  • Work with the Sr. Director, the CIO, web team, campus stakeholders and end-users to set goals, gather requirements, assess needs and priorities, and define solutions for the CCA Portal, and review features, functionality, and content at all stages of definition, design, and development to ensure that the Portal meets the needs of the community.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration with other CCA initiatives and services and provide timely updates about project schedules and new releases.
  • With the release of new features and content, work with the Knowledge Manager to determine the need for change management, communication, and training.
  • Work with the Knowledge Manager to develop a rational and actionable information architecture and content strategy for the Portal, consistent with and complimentary to other college content and marketing initiatives.
  • Work with the web team and Knowledge Manager to define, implement, and refine the features and workflows in Wagtail (our CMS) to provide content owners with a flexible, powerful, and easy-to-use content management experience.
  • Manage web service outages, including coordinating with other teams and communicating out to the campus community.

Project Management – 35%

  • Manage the sprint process and work with the project team on writing tasks and user stories, sprint planning, retrospectives, and other Agile practices. Schedule regular feature releases. Manage and prioritize the backlog.
  • Represent the project vision, goals, scope, and priorities to the team.
  • Work closely with product design resources to translate designs into specifications and requirements for the development team.
  • Provide the resources the team needs to complete their work; mitigate blocks and impediments; facilitate communication within the team and with the CCA community.
  • Work with the team to identify opportunities to improve team processes and communication; implement and test new processes; evaluate and adjust as needed.
  • Manage the QA process, triage issues, and ensure test coverage.
  • Manage project documentation and other artifacts.

Web Services Team Manager – 25%

  • Supervise Web and Mobile Services staff; provide mentorship and guidance; provide regular check-ins, performance reviews, and opportunities for growth; facilitate collaboration within the team and with other teams, stakeholders, and individuals.
  • Hire and supervise work-study staff.
  • Supervise outside vendors and consultants as needed.
  • Lead recruitment and hiring activities; work with the Sr. Director to write job descriptions; work with HR to develop and deliver a recruitment strategy; manage the process in the HR system; provide initial review and screening of job candidates.
  • Work with the Sr. Director and the team to create a healthy and productive environment; building culture and cultivating a customer-focused, responsive team that encourages individual initiative and innovation, and collaboration with colleagues and the CCA community.
  • Champion and advocate for the team within the department and in the community.
  • Maintain and enhance collaborative relationships and partnerships with other IT professionals, professional organizations, open source community members, and associations in higher education.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 2 years project, product, or service management experience: leading a team of developers, designers, QA and/or devops staff in the successful definition, design, development, timely delivery, and maintenance of complex applications, web sites, and/or other digital products.
  • Ability to manage priorities, deadlines, and time critical situations.
  • Demonstrated experience working with stakeholders and end-users to determine need, gather requirements, and define solutions.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills; the ability to work across a range of constituencies (such as students, staff, faculty in a higher ed environment).
  • Highly motivated self-starter capable of working both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; an ability to convey complex concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • A curious mind and a passion for learning new skills and solving problems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICIATIONS:

  • 2+ years working in higher education and a familiarity with academic and administrative practices.
  • 2+ years people management experience: hiring and managing developers, designers, and/or develops staff; providing feedback, mentorship, and growth opportunities.
  • 2+ years working in a highly dynamic and collaborative environment and a demonstrated ability to work with people with different backgrounds and experiences and to find solutions that meet the needs of a diverse community.
  • Experience working on content-centric online projects in the role of information architect, content strategist, developmental editor, senior content editor or user experience designer in higher-ed, digital publishing, journalism, or instructional design.
  • Experience working in an Agile work environment.
  • PMP or Agile Project Management certification.
  • Experience working in user experience design, service design, visual design, and/or business process analysis.
  • A personal or professional art or design practice or an active interest in art and design
