The Assistant Director for Instructional Design at the Center for Teaching (CFT) will promote effective online and blended teaching across campus. The Assistant Director will consult with faculty and other university instructors on the design of online and blended courses and programs that use Vanderbilt’s course management system and other online learning tools. The Assistant Director will draw on instructional design research and practices to help create meaningful learning experiences for Vanderbilt students and ongoing professional development for Vanderbilt instructors.

The Assistant Director for Instructional Design will report to the Director of the Center for Teaching and work collaboratively with senior, technical, and support staff at the CFT, as well as others involved in supporting teaching at the university.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Consulting with faculty and other instructors on the design of online and blended courses and programs, including the articulation of learning objectives, development of assessments and assignments, and planning of learning activities
  • Planning, implementing, and assessing online and in-person CFT programs for instructors that offer opportunities for the Vanderbilt teaching community to learn and implement principles and practices of online and blended course design
  • Designing and facilitating professional development events and resources for instructors with a particular emphasis on skills and strategies for online and blended teaching, both for the entire campus community and for particular departments and units
  • Consulting with and advising departments, schools, and other units on the design and assessment of online and blended courses and programs, as well as the evaluation and adoption of online learning tools
  • Engaging in scholarly work on instructional design, including staying current on research, theory, and practices in instructional design; participating in national conversations on instructional design; and occasionally contributing to the instructional design research literature
  • Serving as a senior lecturer at Vanderbilt, typically teaching one course per year in the Assistant Director’s academic discipline and performing associated responsibilities, pending approval from the relevant department and school

Profile of an Ideal Candidate

  • A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience is necessary
  • A Ph.D., Ed.D., or other terminal degree is strongly preferred
  • Significant experience in online education at the post-secondary level
  • Formal coursework or other training in instructional design
  • Strong consultation, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Familiarity with the academic mission of a research university
  • Experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational development programs
