The University of Alabama (UA) seeks an innovative, future-oriented, and facilitative leader with a high scholarly profile to serve as the next dean of the School of Social Work. The next dean will lead the School on community-engaged research initiatives and social justice solutions for Alabama and beyond. Based on a shared vision for the School, the new dean will provide proactive leadership on academic programs, advancement and development, budget, faculty and staff management, planning, and research. The School seeks a high-integrity individual with a commitment to shared governance principles, including accountable leadership, collaborative decision-making, and effective, open and transparent communication. The School values community engagement skills and the ability to build and sustain positive relationships with students and alumni, the business community, state and federal government officials, and additional stakeholder groups to support the goals of the School and University. The successful candidate must possess an earned doctoral degree, with an ideal candidate having at least one degree in social work. The candidate must also possess a record of excellence in research and scholarship that merits appointment as a tenured full professor. Established in 1965, the UA School of Social Work ranks among the top accredited social work graduate programs in the United States. There are approximately 700 students across the School's BSW, MSW, DSW, and PhD programs, which include coordinated master's degrees with The University of Alabama at Birmingham and the UA School of Law. Of the over 600 social work programs in the nation, the UA School of Social Work is the only one outside of the Washington, D.C. metro area that offers BSW and MSW students the unique opportunity to complete their semester-long field experience in Washington, D.C. The School has emphasized building its international focus across scholarship, teaching, and field activities. The School's 36 full-time faculty and 41 professional and support staff members are dedicated to the success of its programs and students. The School's faculty and staff actively engage with the community, with over $18 million of externally funded research grant and contract dollars used to drive initiatives supportive of social justice across Alabama and beyond.
