Joe William Trotter, Jr. Is Appointed a University Professor at Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University, the highly selective educational institution in Pittsburgh has announced the appointment of seven faculty members fo the rank of University Professor. This is the highest faculty rank at the university.

“University Professors are distinguished by international recognition and for their contributions to education, artistic creativity and/or research,” said Provost Jim Garrett. “Each University Professor exempli!es a high level of professional achievement and an exceptional commitment to academic excellence at our university.”

One of the seven new University Professors is African American.

Joe William Trotter, Jr. is the Giant Eagle Professor of History and Social Justice at Carnegie Mellon University. He is the past chair of the history department and founded and directs the university’s Center for Africanamerican Urban Studies and the Economy.

Professor Trotter is the president-elect of the Urban History Association and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His latest publication is Workers on Arrival: Black Labor in the Making of America (University of California Press, 2019).

Professor Trotter received his bachelor’s degree from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He earned and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
