Temporary Part-time Lecturer Pool in Writing & Literature

The Writing & Literature major in the College of Creative Studies (CCS) at the University of California Santa Barbara invites applications for part-time temporary lecturers to teach a combination of creative writing workshops in fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry; literature; and/or literary publishing seminars. Temporary appointment positions are variable in terms of percentage (5% to 100%) and duration (one quarter to one year). This is a non-tenure track, non-ladder, non-academic senate position. This appointment is for academic year 2020-21 only, with the possibility of reappointment in future years being dependent upon program needs and job performance. For a fall quarter appointment, the service period will begin September 27, 2020; for a winter quarter appointment, the service period will begin January 4, 2021; and for a spring quarter appointment the service period will begin March 29, 2021. Salary is based on UC's salary scales and depends upon qualifications.

In addition to these teaching duties, Writing & Literature lecturers are also expected to make contributions to the administration of the major (including portfolio reviews of sophomore and senior students' work), advise undergraduates, and/or read applications for admissions into the college, as assigned by the College.

The minimum requirement is an MFA (or equivalent) or completion of all requirements for a PhD (or equivalent) except the dissertation in a related field by the time of application. For candidates in pursuit of a PhD, PhD degree conferral must be expected by the start date of the position. Applicants must have a minimum of one quarter of teaching experience at the college level by the time of application (Teaching Assistant experience is counted). Experience as a writer of fiction, creative nonfiction, and/or poetry including publication, editing, and/or active engagement in a writing community is preferred. Strong interpersonal skills are also desired. Experience in contributions to diversity is preferred.

CCS ( is a small undergraduate college designed for self-directed students in the sciences and humanities within a world-class research university. It provides a rigorous, accelerated program that leads students through the production of a body of creative work supported by scholarly research and analysis, and offers a Bachelor of Art in Writing & Literature.
