Prairie View A&M University — Senior Vice President for Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer

Prairie View A&M University invites nominations and applications for the position of Senior Vice President for Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer (SVPBA). Reporting to President Ruth Simmons, the SVPBA provides leadership and strategic vision necessary for the sound management of the university’s financial resources and supervises the day-to-day budget, finance, human resources, public safety, information technology, compliance, auxiliary services and facilities operations.

Prairie View A&M University is designated as an “institution of the first class” in the Texas Constitution. It was founded to educate historically underserved students in the state of Texas. Today, with a growing enrollment that exceeds 8,900 (as of Fall Semester 2019), the university educates students from all backgrounds. Not only are Texas students represented in the student population, but within the university’s enrollment history, students hail from 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and 87 countries.

As a member of the President’s cabinet, the SVPBA provides input at the highest level on strategic issues and should build a reputation as an effective leader with the highest levels of integrity. The university seeks an experienced financial manager who is also a strategic thinker, a collaborative partner and a leader with excellent communication skills. Candidates will have an understanding that in a university setting the role of the business affairs is to ensure the academic units have the necessary resources to excel in teaching, research and service. The SVPBA will help create a customer-friendly and student-centered environment and value institutional effectiveness. 

The successful candidate will have experience working with a president/CEO and a board, as well as internal and external constituencies to provide transparent, accurate and efficient business processes. This individual must have experience working in a complex organization and have the ability to work with the legislature to support the President. It is preferred, but not required, that this individual have experience in higher education. The ideal candidate will have a record of accomplishment with financial data management and data analysis and the ability to develop, refine and maintain financial systems in a public university with a national presence. Other competencies include a record of identifying and establishing new sources of revenue, the ability to work with faculty and professional staff on major issues, and a passion for building social capital to enhance the institution.
