Job Purpose
The College of Liberal Arts at Towson University is accepting applications for a full-time Academic Advisor to provide effective academic advising to a variety of student populations including First Year Experience students, transfer students and at risk students. Additional responsibilities will include information sharing related to university advising policies and procedures, orientation meetings for entering students, and oversight of individualized degree completion plans (Maryland Senate Bill 740). This general advising position will work with faculty advisors to encourage student success.

Provide informative and collaborative academic advising. Work with faculty advisors. Advise assigned group of students (Including First Year Experience). Advising will be offered in a variety of formats including face to face, small groups and online. Provide support for “at risk” students (students experiencing challenges that impact advancement to degree). Provide assistance through collaboration with faculty advisors, Academic Advising Center, and other support units on campus. Teach students strategies related to academic planning, monitoring time to degree, developing a four-year plan and identifying resources for academic success. Participate in assessment of student progress to degree using EAB Navigate Student Success Collaborative (SSC), PeopleSoft and other software. Serve as a resource for up-to date university information, knowledge and best practices for advising success. Gather and disseminate advising related information to students and faculty regarding University policies, registration, core coursework and degree completion. Develop expertise in EAB Navigate SSC for reports and assessment related to various indicators of student progress/success. Offer guidance as requested for faculty using EAB Navigate SSC.

Use resources to provide year round support for students and faculty. Conduct presentations related to using PeopleSoft in academic planning, understanding core curriculum, graduation requirements and other topics that enhances student success. Help develop web-based resources for students and faculty. Prepare, organize and participate in transfer advising programs in August and January, and freshmen orientation programs in June and July. Prepare and participate in Open Houses and TU4U recruitment events. Participate in professional development to strengthen knowledge and skills as a professional advisor. Participate in management of data bases related to academic degree plans, student retention and other indicators of student success.


  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience advising students in a college or university setting.
  • Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of education theory and college student development.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience utilizing critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork in the workplace.
  • Strong computer skills.
