A Trio of African American Men Receive Notable Honors and Awards

J. Marshall Shepherd, the Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor and director of the atmospheric sciences program at the University of Georgia, received the 2020 Mani L. Bhaumik Award for Public Engagement with Science from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Before joining the faculty at the University of Georgia, Dr. Shepherd was a research meteorologist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Dr. Shepherd holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in meteorology, all from Florida State University. He is the past president of the American Meteorological Society.

H. Carl McCall, former chairman of the State University of New York Board of Trustees, is being recognized by having the central administration building of the State University of New York named in his honor. McCall, now 84 years old, served as state comptroller and was the first African American to become a major party nominee for statewide office.

At the ceremony announcing the honor, McCall stated that “it has been my honor to be one of many sources of leadership and influence to provide more for New Yorkers, particularly by expanding opportunities for all students to get a higher education,”

Linwood Whitten, director of diversity and international affairs and the Title IX coordinator at Alabama State University was recently honored for his life’s work and dedication to diversity. He received the Outstanding Contributions to Student Engagement Award from the Alabama chapter of NASPA.

Dr. Whitten is a graduate of Alabama A&M University. He holds a master’s degree from Arkansas State University and a doctorate from Life University.
