California State University, East Bay (Cal State East Bay) seeks a community-minded, student-focused and inspirational leader to join its campus community as its next president. 

Cal State East Bay is recognized as a regionally engaged and globally oriented university with a strong commitment to academic innovation, excellence in teaching and faculty and student research, student success, community focused service learning, diversity and sustainability. Founded in 1957, Cal State East Bay is one of 23 universities of the California State University (CSU) system. Cal State East Bay’s beautiful main campus is located in the Hayward Hills with panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay shoreline. Situated above the city of Hayward, the university offers an ideal setting for teaching and learning with easy access to the many cities and amenities in the Bay Area. The university, with a student population of nearly 15,000 students, has a satellite campus in Concord, a professional development center in Oakland and a significant presence online. The university’s students arrive predominantly from Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, and over 60 percent are the first in their families to attend university. Cal State East Bay‘s four colleges, including Business and Economics, Education and Allied Studies, Letters, Arts and Social Sciences, and Science, offer a total of 49 baccalaureate degrees, 51 minors, 24 credentials and certificates, 34 master’s degrees and a doctorate in Educational Leadership. The university strives to meet the educational needs and to contribute to the vitality of the East Bay, the state, the nation and global communities. 

Reporting to the chancellor of the California State University system, the next president will partner with campus faculty, students, staff, alumni and surrounding community leaders, to shape and execute an inspirational vision and plan for the university’s future. The next president should be a compelling advocate for its diverse student-body and develop initiatives that provide support for both academic success and the basic needs required to thrive and prosper as students aim to improve their livelihood by obtaining a degree and ultimately make positive contributions to society. The president will nurture a highly student-centered environment and champion, cultivate and support a diverse, equitable and inclusive campus community. The next president will invigorate the institution’s environmental and sustainability initiatives, and be a staunch advocate for and supporter of its objectives related to carbon neutrality. The president will focus on improving facilities on campus and strengthening a culture of research, creative activity and excellence in teaching in the faculty – supporting existing programs and expanding others – thus giving students expanded access to active scholars. The president will be an effective and active fundraiser and lead in the creation of a strong, stable financial and budget plan that will increase and diversify revenue. Finally, the next president will also be expected to work collaboratively across the CSU system and be a highly visible and engaged leader in the Bay Area community including Hayward, Concord, Oakland and the surrounding region. 

The president will be an accomplished leader and administrator with the experience required to lead an organization of Cal State East Bay’s size and complexity. The president will demonstrate a deep commitment to students, particularly first-generation college students from low income and diverse backgrounds. Likewise, the president should have a track-record of championing and nurturing diverse, equitable and inclusive communities for students, faculty and staff and have the courage and conviction to take a stand on issues of importance to the campus. The president will be dedicated to the value and practice of shared governance and committed to the full range of academic programs represented at Cal State East Bay and to continued efforts to improve tenure-track density and faculty research and creative activity. The president must be a consummate relationship builder and community-minded individual who has a strong desire to become highly visible and active in the Bay Area community including Hayward, Concord, Oakland and the surrounding region. A strong capacity for fundraising and building industry partnerships will be important, as well as management of large, complex budgets. The president must be a bold and courageous servant leader.
