University of Massachusetts Amherst — Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences

The University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) seeks a strategic, imaginative, and collaborative academic leader to serve as the next Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS). This is an opportunity to lead a deeply engaged community that is committed to rigorous interdisciplinary inquiry, student success, and social justice. SBS is home to over 200 faculty and the departments of Anthropology, Communication, Economics, Journalism, Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning, Political Science, Resource Economics, and Sociology, as well as the School of Public Policy. Eighteen research centers, institutes, and programs connect College faculty with colleagues on campus and throughout the region. SBS is the second-largest academic unit at the University, serving nearly 4,800 undergraduate majors and over 500 graduate students.

The largest public university in New England and the flagship of the University of Massachusetts system, UMass Amherst has 11 schools and colleges and nearly 1,500 full-time tenure and non-tenure track faculty. It serves over 23,500 undergraduates (from 78 countries and every state in the union) and over 7,000 graduate students. Total research and development expenditures were $211 million in 2018, about one-third of the $651 million in research and development expenditures across the University of Massachusetts system. Three years removed from a record-breaking capital campaign, UMass Amherst has undertaken over $2 billion (with public and private support) in construction and renovations, adding 3 million gross square feet of facilities in the past 15 years.

The next Dean will join the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences as the University fully engages in its strategic plan, which sets forth goals for student success, partnerships on and off campus, the pursuit and application of knowledge for the betterment of society, and the strengthening of a community of diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect. These aims go to the heart of the historic and current work of SBS; the College is particularly well-positioned to take a leading role in the implementation of the plan. Working with the faculty and staff of SBS, and colleagues throughout the University, the Dean will strengthen SBS’s programs and look for opportunities to extend SBS’s impact through new offerings; champion the work of the College; nurture research and scholarship; enhance the College’s financial base; and build the community of the College.
