Description of Responsibilities:

The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics has overall responsibility for the conduct of the Intercollegiate Athletic Program. This entails either direct responsibility or supervisory responsibility through assistant athletic directors, coaches and staff who conduct various aspects of the program.

Responsibilities also include:

  • Program Policies and Procedures – The Director is responsible for developing and implementing policies that will direct the conduct of intercollegiate sports in all its facets with attention to detail, professionalism and equity including areas of scheduling, facility use, budget allocations, and program planning. The Director shall guide program philosophy, focusing on the connection between intellectual, personal, and athletic development of student athletes. 
  • The Director will assign appropriate duties to assistants and meet regularly with them to monitor progress toward established goals and objectives. 
  • Departmental:  The Director is responsible for planning, convening, and conducting regular departmental meetings.  Departmental meetings should at least cover such topics as policy development, program needs, program assessment, communication among staff, performance expectations, services to athletes, collaborative problem-solving, strategic planning and budget.
  • Personnel – The Director is responsible for coordinating the selection, supervision, development, and evaluation of all Athletic Department professional, classified and student staff. This will be done with input from appropriate assistant directors and other colleagues as needed.  Provide appropriate orientation programs for new staff.
  • Compliance/Rules – The Director will ensure that the compliance officer for the department properly administers NCAA forms and maintains appropriate records to monitor student athlete eligibility and compliance with NCAA regulations. In addition the Director will see that all students, staff, booster clubs, and alumni adhere to NCAA, SUNYAC, and ECAC rules and regulations.
  • Scheduling – The Director will supervise team scheduling and resulting travel, game management, and officiating needs. This is to include preseason, intercession, and spring trip needs.
  • Long Range Planning – With input from departmental staff, the IAB, and student athlete advisory groups, the Director will develop a long range plan for the department that will address the college the division strategic plans, facility updates, equipment needs, and personnel needs. This plan will be revisited on a regular basis and adjusted to reflect changing attitudes and conditions.
  • Sports Publicity – The Director will supervise the Sports Information Director in the formulation of a plan to provide appropriate publicity for teams and for the department as well as work with media and with alumni.  Supervise the maintenance of appropriate departmental website, including statistics, schedules, and athlete promotions.
  • University Responsibility – The Director will serve on university committees as appropriate in consultation with supervisor, will assign staff to Divisional committees and work groups, and provide leadership to integrating athletics into the life and management of the College.  The Director will encourage departmental participation in community service and will engage in community relations through appropriate means to improve college athletics community participation. 
  • Facilities:  The Director is the building coordinator for athletic facilities and is responsible for monitoring conditions, seeking upgrades and repairs, and scheduling events and activities consistent with the requirements of the College’s Facilities Use Policy.
  • Budget – The Director, with input from department staff, will develop a yearly budget plan to be  presented to the Intercollegiate Athletic Board (IAB) and recommended by that group to the college president. The Director will monitor all athletic accounts.

The Director will coordinate reports to NCAA and SUNYAC through appropriate College channels.

The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics reports, and is responsible, to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

 Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Administrative experience in athletics, including budget management, staff supervision, and facilities management
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of NCAA rules and familiarity with NCAA compliance procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply rules and policies, including a student conduct code, with integrity
  • Three years of intercollegiate or professional head coaching experience
  • Experience with external fundraising, marketing and promotion
  • Demonstrated a record of establishing and maintaining an excellent relationship with the local community and alumni
  • Demonstrated leadership and communication skills and an ability to select and mentor coaches
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with other institutional departments, particularly Intramurals and Recreation, Residence Life, Facilities Maintenance, the Intercollegiate Athletic Board, and faculty and staff
  • Demonstrated Commitment to diversity and inclusion in professional work and/or service
