Oregon State University — Dean of the College of Education

Oregon State University (OSU), Oregon’s land-grant research university and the state’s only institution to hold both the Carnegie Foundation’s top designation for research institutions and its prestigious Community Engagement classification, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the role of the Dean of the College of Education.

The Dean will lead efforts to better position the College as an international leader in innovative research and in the preparation of scholars, educational leaders, counselors, and lifelong learning leaders in two signature areas critical to an increasingly complex and global society: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and cultural and linguistic diversity. The College of Education is already well known throughout the State of Oregon as an organization that develops change agents in the form of researchers, scholars, learning leaders, teachers, and counselors. These change agents make a difference by promoting innovation, social justice, and lifelong learning and preparing citizens who are socially empowered, reflective, innovative, and caring members of increasingly diverse communities and the world. Over the years, the College has cultivated programs that directly impact Oregon’s public education system through both teaching and scholarship. From the preparation and licensing of new teachers and new programs in clinical mental health for counselors to the cultivation of new college administrators, the College plays a significant role in the state, making a difference in the lives of Oregonians every day.

The next Dean will join a College on an upward trajectory with a renewed sense of purpose. A new University budget model that supports University’s strategic plan, recognizes the diverse academic missions of OSU’s colleges and centers, and promotes interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching, research, and outreach, has proved advantageous for the College and can be further leveraged. A few significant faculty recruitments in the last several years have led to an increase in research productivity. And, the College’s enrollment, particularly in online programs and at the Cascade campus, has grown. The College offers a unique Ecampus presence, maintains very strong partnerships with school districts, and has led the way in teacher accreditation. Working collaboratively, the Dean will build on recent success, continuing to raise the profile and influence of the College which will in turn result in an even greater impact on the region, state, and nation.

As part of a trailblazing R1 research institution, the College seeks a creative thinker who is comfortable operating beyond functional silos and who is excited by boundary-spanning opportunities. OSU seeks a collaborative and inspiring Dean that will hold fast to OSU’s core values of accountability, diversity, integrity, respect, and social responsibility, while strategically leading the College of Education into its next phase. In fulfilling this goal, the Dean of the College of Education will address the following opportunities and challenges:

  • Identify strategic investments across programs to realize the College of Education’s vision;
  • Operationalize the University’s focus on inclusive excellence to provide access to higher education across all programs;
  • Leverage the University’s emphasis on preeminence in research to create socially just systems of education;
  • Increase the visibility, reach, and impact of the College of Education in the state, region, and beyond;
  • Ensure a robust economic foundation for the College.
