Product Design Faculty Position Announcement
Position Beginning in Academic Year 2020-21

Kansas City Art Institute is a leading NASAD accredited college of art and design, founded in 1885 and located in the cultural heart of metropolitan Kansas City, Missouri. The college enrolls nearly 700 undergraduate students drawn regionally, nationally and internationally. Kansas City is home to leading product design companies resulting in one of the nation’s strongest design communities.

The Product Design department of Kansas City Art Institute invites applications and nominations for a new full-time, non-tenure track faculty position in Product Design. This position will be a 9-month appointment, beginning August 2020. Ranking and compensation based on experience.

We seek a well-rounded design educator to play a key role in further developing this new major and promoting a progressive mission; including creating new curricula and building strong industry relationships. The successful candidate will demonstrate (1) a keen eye toward to the future of product design and an understanding of how that can influence progressive design education; (2) the ability to teach a combination of practice-based studio classes to multiple levels of undergraduate students; and (3) the skills to collaboratively contribute to the activities, service, and growth of the department, college, and the broader professional communities..

KCAI Department of Product Design
The KCAI Product Design program leverages the Institute’s strengths in creative form-making while taking a deep dive into the design of products and systems that actively respond to global challenges. The program is distinguished by the innovative connectivities that are at its core; collaborations with all art and design disciplines, industry professionals, entrepreneurship educators, alumni, and community leaders. The Product Design program’s core mission is to prepare future designers to be agents for change through the objects and systems they create.

A key feature of KCAI’s Product Design program is its unique collaboration with University of Missouri at Kansas City’s Regnier Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Through this partnership we provide students with access to top entrepreneurship classes, providing industry insights and business acumen for students to advance their product ideas and career goals.

Preferred Experience, Skills and Education

  • Terminal degree or its equivalent in industrial design / product design
  • Demonstrated experience working in design
  • Relevant background for teaching courses at the undergraduate level
  • Capacity to design products using current and emerging technologies and processes
  • Demonstrated history of innovation
  • Excellent communication skills
