Haverford College — Provost

Haverford College invites nominations and applications for the position of provost.

A leading undergraduate liberal arts college located outside of Philadelphia, Haverford College is known for its academic quality, ethical engagement, sense of community, and beautiful arboretum campus. Among the most selective colleges in the nation, Haverford enrolls just over 1300 students from 50 countries whose make-up is more than a third domestic students of color. The College, committed to the development of the whole student, maintains a 9:1 student to faculty ratio and values a close-knit community where students: are collaborators and colleagues on faculty research; complete a required senior thesis; ratify and steward an Honor Code that shapes their academic and social lives; and participate in the arts, service, athletics, and scholarship while running more than 145 student groups. Haverford’s 160 faculty members are internationally recognized scholars, artists, and thought leaders as well as outstanding teachers dedicated to working closely with undergraduates. Haverford’s three academic centers bridge curricular and co-curricular experiences, and students also benefit from a four-college exchange program with nearby Bryn Mawr College, Swarthmore College, and the University of Pennsylvania. Academic collaboration with Bryn Mawr College is particularly robust, as exemplified by the array of shared and complementary departments and courses of study. Although the College is nonsectarian today, Haverford’s Quaker heritage continues to guide the community. Haverford students’ experiences are enriched by a longstanding ethos of individual and communal integrity and responsibility, which today’s students bear out in their academic and civic pursuits on campus, in the greater Philadelphia region, and around the world. Haverford alumni go on to have a disproportionate impact on the world with sixty percent of graduates obtaining advanced degrees.

Reporting to President Wendy Raymond, the next provost will serve as a key member of the senior leadership team with oversight of the faculty, the curriculum, faculty research, the three academic centers, the Distinguished Visitors program, and the library. The provost manages an office of eight as well as six additional direct reports; the academic affairs division is supported by $33 million in operating budgets (including funding for academic departments, academic centers, the provost’s office, and the libraries), $7 million from endowed and other restricted funding, and an additional $7.8 million in total sponsored research. The provost will work closely and collaboratively with the faculty, academic staff, and other community members to advance the academic mission of the College. The provost must be a creative thinker who is able to identify and capitalize on opportunities to advance both the academic mission of the College and the related professional aspirations of its faculty and who will assume a leadership role in shaping Haverford’s current college-wide strategic planning process. The ideal candidate will bring meaningful experience in and passion for fostering learning communities that are diverse, equitable, and inclusive. They will lead with a style well-fitted to a community where shared governance, consensus-driven decision-making, and steadfast support of faculty as educators and scholars are deeply ingrained. They will also be an accomplished scholar and teacher with a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education and the liberal arts. The successful candidate will need to qualify for appointment as a full professor.
