Coastal Carolina University — Assistant Professor of Engineering Science

The Department of Physics and Engineering Science at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning fall 2020 in support of its Engineering Science B.S. program.

Applicants should be teacher-scholars who will establish undergraduate research agendas, and teach introductory engineering courses and traditional upper-level courses in their area. Experience teaching, working with, and supporting a diverse student population is desired. Ideal candidates will also be able to continue scholarly and professional growth which we broadly define to include sponsored research and consultancy with our corporate partners; and most importantly to include our undergraduate students in this process.

The position requires engaging undergraduate engineering students through active advising and mentoring extra-curricular groups; to include participation in local, national and/or international competitions such as the ASCE Concrete Canoe, NASA Human-Powered Rover, etc. The successful candidate is also expected to develop industry partnerships with a focus on the undergraduate research and design activities.  There is an expectation for this position to participate in the selection and setup of new laboratories and equipment. Thus, the successful candidates will have a unique opportunity to set-up labs and facilities to help develop this newly created program. The candidates will also engage in the ABET accreditation process and help in efforts to earn accreditation for this program.

Start-up funds will be available to establish a research agenda that incorporates undergraduate students. The university’s Smith Science building recently underwent a $6.5 million renovation that will include over 1,600 square feet of shared research space for new faculty members in the Engineering Science program.

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline by the time of appointment. The candidate is required to either have a P.E. license at the time of appointment or able to obtain one with two years of employment at Coastal Carolina.

As part of a successful on-campus interview process, candidates will be expected to provide a demonstration of teaching effectiveness and evidence of understanding diverse populations.

Industrial experience is highly desirable. Civil or Mechanical engineering candidates with experience in infrastructure-related projects will be given special preference.

Interested candidates should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three professional references, electronically at http://jobs.coastal.edu. One reference must be able to address the applicant’s teaching ability. Candidates must also submit a two-page research agenda that emphasizes the potential for undergraduate participation and a two-page statement of teaching philosophy that describes specifics of what a typical class session would look like to an outside observer. Screening of applications will begin November 30, 2019. Inquiries about the positions should be directed to Monica Gray by email to mgray2@coastal.edu.
