Miami University — Digital Discovery Librarian / Assistant Librarian

University Libraries:  Digital Discovery Librarian/Assistant Librarian to develop methods of discovery that foster a seamless experience for users to uncover and access Library resources.  The position will also engage in providing library instruction that relates to both using the tools of discovery that are developed and Library research in general. As a member of the Library Systems department, this position reports to the Director of Library IT.  Position is continuing contract eligible, requirements at http://www.lib.miamioh.edu/about/larps.pdf.

Duties:

  • Provide project leadership and technical direction to develop and support applications to optimize discoverability and availability of multiple resources.
  • Seek to impact the way students access information in cooperation with the Web Services team.
  • Develop online learning objects and research support tools.
  • Design and develop applications, application customizations, and internal documentation.
  • Investigate technologies to improve access and delivery of digital resources and services.
  • Ensure conformity to accessibility standards.
  • Provide support and technical expertise to streamline staff workflows.
  • Provide library instruction in multiple modes to support access to discoverability as well as curricula and research.
  • Build good working relationships with members of the Libraries staff as well as with the greater university community.
  • Work creatively, collaboratively and effectively in both group situations and independently.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Require: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or non-U.S. equivalent; familiarity with database applications (e.g., postgres, MySQL); familiarity with web APIs and mobile technologies; working knowledge of one or more programming languages (e.g., PHP, Ruby, Python, Java); ability to work independently and manage projects successfully.

Consideration may be given to applicants with familiarity with current library softwares and technologies (e.g., III Sierra, Ebsco Discovery Service, EZProzy,  OCLC Connexion, MARCEdit, ILLiad, Springshare library suite); demonstrated experience with the backend of an integrated library management system (ILS/LMS), library discovery product, and/or equivalent database; strong interest in emerging technologies and general trends in librarianship and higher education; knowledge of cataloging processes and techniques or familiarity with basic cataloging standards, including RDA, Library of Congress Subject Heading practice, Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal Classification systems, and MARC21 formats.
