Black Students Confronted by Racial Slurs at the University of Florida

According to a report in the student newspaper, a group of Black students at the University of Florida was subjected to racial slurs by two White male students. The Black students were in a van operated by Student Nighttime Auxiliary Patrol, a free service to provide safe transportation for students around campus.  At 2 a.m. the van was approached by two White male students. One of the students said, “Go to sleep niggers.”

The University of Florida enrolls more than 35,000 undergraduate students, according to the latest data supplied to the U.S. Department of Education. African Americans make up just 6 percent of the undergraduate student body whereas Blacks make up 16 percent of the state’s population.

  1. As an alumnus of the University of Florida I am both embarrassed and outraged that this type of ignorant racism still occurs at the school. I am also disheartened by the fact that the flagship university in our state only has 6% black student body. I believe that in its “rankings above all else” approach to admissions, the University of Florida has forgotten that the quality of its student body cannot be measured by SAT scores alone. The fact that top tier universities like the University of Chicago have gone to a test-optional admissions process shows that there is more to admitting quality students than test scores.

  2. trump has certainly made bigots comfortable in their skin as they continually show us their ignorance, insecurities, and inappropriateness .
