Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) invites nominations of, and applications from, dynamic and collaborative leaders for the position of Dean of the IU School of Liberal Arts. IUPUI seeks a talented and energetic leader who believes in the ability to enhance students’ educational experiences through transformation and innovative change. The dean will foster cutting-edge research, strengthen the commitment to outstanding teaching, and promote meaningful service. The School seeks to improve student success, partnerships within local, state, and international communities, develop new and strengthen existing marketing and enrollment strategies, and provide bold advocacy for the value of a liberal arts education within the University, regionally, statewide, and beyond.

IUPUI is a core campus of Indiana University which is celebrating its bicentennial in 2019.  IUPUI is Indiana’s urban research campus, a recognized national leader in life sciences research, civic engagement, service learning, and first-year experiences. The campus is comprised of 17 schools and two colleges that offer more than 350 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs, including programs in medicine, dentistry, nursing, law, business, social work, and the liberal arts. The School focuses on teaching and research in the humanities and social sciences and is located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. The School comprises 12 academic departments (Anthropology, Communication Studies, Economics, English, Geography, History, Journalism & Public Relations, Philosophy, Political Science, Religious Studies, Sociology, and World Languages & Cultures) as well as 25 academic programs and more than a dozen research centers and institutes. The School has an operating budget of over $25 million; more than 1,800 undergraduate students and over 200 graduate students; over 25,000 alumni; and has 208 full-time faculty (117 tenured/tenure-track, 91 clinical/associate/visiting). The School has recently developed a number of new dual degree pathways, facilitating student opportunities for dual degrees, minors, and concentrations in liberal arts. The next dean will provide inclusive and transparent leadership to faculty, staff, and students across multiple disciplines; build a strong vision for the future of the school; implement strategies to enhance diversity at all levels; develop a sound financial plan and budget; guide the academic curriculum across programs, provide innovative and effective educational offerings; and be a strong external partner in building resources and advocating for the liberal arts. 

The ideal candidate will be an engaging and influential academic leader; an empathetic and active listener; a passionate believer in the transformative impact of liberal arts for students and the community; a transparent administrator who values engagement on all levels; and a strong, effective communicator. Candidates must have the academic qualifications and achievements consistent with an appointment as a tenured, full professor in the School, significant administrative experience within a complex environment, and a strong understanding and experience in developing and managing budgets, ideally in a responsibility centered management environment.
