A Trio of African Americans Who Have Been Appointed to Dean Positions

Dawn Brown McNair was appointed dean of mathematics and sciences at Livingstone College in Salisbury, Maryland. She was an associate professor of mathematics at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dr. McNair is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. McNair was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in applied mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Doze Y. Butler has been named dean/director for the School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. From 2017-2019, she was the program leader for the Apparel Merchandising and Textiles Program at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  At Southern, she also served as associate dean of the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences and interim dean of the School of Graduate Studies. Earlier in her career, she served as a professor of human sciences for Texas A&M University-Kingsville

Dr. Butler holds a bachelor’s degree in home economics-clothing and textiles from Southern University, a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from the University of Louisiana-Monroe, an MBA from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and a doctoral degree in clothing and fashion merchandising from Texas Woman’s University.

Hilton Kelly was appointed dean of liberal arts and humanities at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Dr. Kelly is the author of Race, Remembering and Jim Crow’s Teachers (Routledge, 2010). He is the immediate past president of the American Educational Studies Association.

Dr. Kelly is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he majored in history. He holds a master’s degree in labor studies and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
