Job Purpose
Towson University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, with appointment to begin July 1, 2020. TU is a highly diverse and inclusive institution. In its new designation as a Carnegie-classified Doctoral/Professional University, TU enrolls close to 20,000 undergraduates and over 3,000 graduate students across six academic colleges (business, education, fine arts, health professions, liberal arts, science and mathematics), has over 865 full-time faculty, and offers more than 65 bachelor’s, 45 master’s, and 5 doctoral programs. Our centrally located campus sits on 330 rolling green acres and is 10 miles north of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, 45 miles north of Washington D.C., and 95 miles south of Philadelphia.

Concurrent with growth in graduate education programming, this redefined leadership position will oversee and guide strategic development in scholarship, research and creative inquiry across the university. The University seeks a Dean with a strong vision and passion for establishing programs of funded scholarship to support growth and excellence in graduate education. The Dean of Graduate Studies and Research should lead in promoting interdisciplinary sponsored activity across a wide diversity of programs, ideas and people.

Description
The Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will provide executive leadership and administrative oversight for all aspects of graduate programming, faculty research development, and sponsored programming. The new Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will collaborate with the Provost, Deans, Enrollment Management, Faculty and others to develop a strategic plan for graduate studies and a growing portfolio of sponsored programs.

Responsibilities related to graduate education include:

  • Grow and maintain a diverse portfolio of high quality graduate programs
  • Oversee graduate program policies and standards
  • Coordinate efforts across campus for interdisciplinary programs
  • Provide program-level support for distributed learning, program assessment and evaluation
  • Explore opportunities for new graduate and certificate programs
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for marketing of graduate programs
  • Advocate effectively for resources to support graduate education and directly for graduate students ensuring ongoing funding of graduate assistantship opportunities

Responsibilities in the strategic leadership of scholarship, research and creative inquiry include:

  • Develop strategic plan and institutional capacity for sponsored activity and faculty-mentored research
  • Collaborate with TU Divisions for Advancement and Strategic Partnerships and Applied Research to identify and develop opportunities for sponsored activity
  • Foster faculty development for success with external funding and grants management
  • Identify creative linkages across programs, departments and colleges for interdisciplinary work and provide support for interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Provide administrative oversite of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research to include pre-award and post-award grants management
  • Ensure responsible conduct of research and compliance with federal regulations

Qualifications
Applicants or nominees must hold an earned terminal degree and possess a substantial record of scholarship, research or creative accomplishment, excellent teaching, and academic engagement that would qualify for appointment as a tenured professor. Applicants must have academic administrative experience of at least five years at the departmental level or higher, including significant experience with sponsored activity. Other qualifications appropriate to the position include grants management and oversight of federal regulations that guide ethical practice of research, ability to interpret policy and set high standards, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, effective communication with diverse audiences, and ability to address graduate education trends and sponsored activity.

A Criminal Background Investigation is required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
