Noose Found in a Residence Hall on the Campus of the University of Illinois

A noose was found in an elevator in a residence hall on the campus of the University of Illinois in Urbana. The noose was found by Black undergraduate students and photos of the noose were circulated on social media.

Campus officials said university police and multiple campus departments responded quickly after hearing the news. But the on-campus group Black Students for Revolution issued a statement expressing disappointment that two days after the noose was found campus officials had not made any statement about the incident.

Three years ago, a noose was thrown on a table in front of an African American employee in a university workplace.

The flagship campus of the University of Illinois enrolls nearly 34,000 undergraduate students and more than 15,000 graduate students, according to the latest data supplied to the U.S. Department of Education. African Americans make up 6 percent of the undergraduate student body, whereas Blacks make up more than 14 percent of the state’s population.
