Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering — Lecturer, Design and Innovation

Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking a creative and motivated individual for a teaching track faculty position. The faculty member will co-instruct the department’s undergraduate design courses in the Design Team Program (https://cbid.bme.jhu.edu/academics/undergraduate-studies/). The faculty member will have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to other BME programs and initiatives.

Design Team is the premiere undergraduate healthcare design program in the #1 Biomedical Engineering program in the nation, with over 100 undergraduates and 50 clinicians involved each year. Student teams complete their projects in partnership with clinicians at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes and mentors from organizations including APL, Jhpiego, JHU Tech Ventures, and the FDA. Projects span all areas of medicine and all technology areas, and include both developed-world and global health related projects. Industrial and other commercial partners are also involved as project sponsors.

Candidates should have hands-on experience in the design and development of solutions to real world healthcare challenges. A PhD or MS/MSE in an engineering discipline, or closely related field, is desired, however candidates with a BS Engineering degree combined with 5 years or more of directly related industry experience will also be considered and are competitive. Candidates with medical product development experience and demonstrated track record of innovation are especially encouraged to apply. Teaching experience is required, either in the form of formal education in an academic setting or mentorship and talent development in an industrial setting.

Specific responsibilities include: 1) co-teaching the Design Team courses, 2) mentoring student teams, 3) creating partnerships with clinicians and other industry professional mentors, and 4) facilitating product development and translation with teams that continue projects beyond the Design Team course.

The target of this faculty search is the Lecturer position, but highly qualified applicants may be considered at other levels.
