The School of International Letters & Cultures (SILC) German program at Arizona State University (Tempe campus) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer of German with an anticipated start date of January 2020. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, 9-month appointment (August 16 – May 15). The SILC German program offers a Bachelor of Arts major and minor degree programs. This position is non-tenure eligible, but renewable pending satisfactory job performance, availability of funding, and the needs of the university. Essential Functions of the Position:
The successful candidate will be expected to: 

  • Teach 6 courses per academic year in the lower and upper division undergraduate curriculum of the German program. 
  • Provide leadership in program coordination (prepare syllabi, lectures, class materials, and schedule class assignments).
  • Contribute to curriculum development.
  • Participate in program-related activities and service to the program.

Required Qualifications:

  • MA degree or higher in a relevant area, including German language pedagogy, teaching of German as a foreign language, applied linguistics, German literary and cultural studies, or related field by time of appointment.
  • Three years’ experience in higher education teaching German language and cultural studies courses (elementary through advanced level), and evidence of effective teaching. 
  • Native/near-native proficiency in both German and English.

Desired Qualifications:

  • ABD or PhD in a relevant area, including German language pedagogy, teaching of German as a foreign language, applied linguistics, German literary and cultural studies, or a related field by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in online teaching and/or appropriate technologies in language instruction.
  • Experience participating in study abroad programs.
  • Experience with ACTFL proficiency standards and proficiency-based approaches to teaching German.
  • Teaching/research profile in migration studies or environmental humanities.
  • Demonstrated success meeting the needs of underrepresented student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities.
