New Report Documents the Rise of Racial Hate on College and University Campuses

The Center for American Progress has released a new report on the rise in hate crimes on the campuses of American colleges and universities. The report document that in 2016, more than 1,000 hate crimes were committed on college campuses across the country.

Furthermore, the report finds that between 2011 and 2016, there was a 40 percent increase in campus hate crimes. There were 763 reported hate crimes on college campuses in 2011 compared to 1,070 in 2016.

The report also notes that incidents of campus hate do not always rise to the level of criminal activity. The report notes that since the beginning of 2018, there have been at least 434 incidents of White supremacist posters or other printed material appearing on college campuses.

The authors of the report conclude that “universities have a responsibility to protect and assist all students, regardless of their background, and administrators cannot allow racial trauma to go unaddressed. Many universities have expressed their commitment to diversity and inclusion, but this commitment must go beyond pamphlets and mission statements. This commitment should extend to providing adequate psychological resources. Universities should commit to ensuring that students of color have access to the mental health resources they need to succeed.”
