In Memoriam: Julius S. Scott Jr., 1925 -2019

Julius S. Scott, who served as president of two historically Black colleges and as interim president of several additional colleges and universities died on August 1. He was 94 years old and had recently celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary..

A native of Houston, Dr. Scott earned a bachelor’s degree at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He earned a second bachelor’s degree at Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, and a master’s degree at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Scott earned his Ph.D. at Boston University.

Dr. Scott served as president of historically Black Paine College in Georgia from 1975 and again from 1988 to 1994. He also served as president of his alma mater, Wiley College, from 1996 to 1998. Dr. Scott also was interim president at Albany State University in Georgia, the Medical College of Georgia, Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Savannah State University in Georgia.
