Claflin University Creates Pathway Program for Nursing Students at Technical Colleges

Claflin University, the historically Black educational institution in Orangeburg, South Carolina, has partnered with the South Carolina Technical College System to a create pathway program for nursing students. The agreement between the two institutions will allow registered nurses who have earned an associate’s degree at one of the members of the South Carolina Technical College System to transfer to Claflin University to earn a bachelor of science degree in nursing.

Clafin’s RN to BSN program is 100 percent online. Since its creation in 2016, more than 50 graduates have completed the program.

“Our responsibility will be to get the word out about this great opportunity with Claflin,” said South Carolina Technical College System President Tim Hardee. “While we have great working relationships with institutions across the state of South Carolina, this, because of it being an online delivery system with Claflin, provides even greater access for those students.”

“The path is all about making a seamless approach for these students,” said Shannon Smith, chair of Claflin’s department of nursing. “When they start their nursing program, some of them already know they want to be a BSN. This is a roadmap that tells them these are the steps you take to attain that BSN degree.”

Dr. Smith holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina. She earned a doctor of nursing practice degree from the University of South Carolina.
