Description of Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), the Assistant Director for Administrative Applications Services is responsible for the University’s enterprise-wide applications services.

The Assistant Director will lead a culture of engagement and close partnerships with colleagues across the institution to assist in the establishment of the vision and long-range plans for the delivery of applications services at SUNY Oswego. Responsible for all community-wide enabling applications technologies, including those supporting student services, accounting and financial services, human resources, development, research administration, communications, hospitality and event management among others. Additionally, will be responsible for overseeing the strategic application initiatives as defined through the IT governance process.

The Assistant Director Administrative Application Services promotes an integrated IT organization and communal values and demonstrates and actively supports a climate of inclusion in the interests of a diverse and vibrant workforce. Promoting a culture of mutual respect for differing perspectives and encouraging inquiry and healthy interaction and shared decision making. Works with peers to align decision making for the best interests of students, faculty and staff.

As a member of the IT senior leadership team, institutional leaders and colleagues in support of major projects with a primary focus on enabling application technologies, the Assistant Director will contribute to the overall development of department strategic goals, performance metrics, communication practices and culture. This includes overseeing and ensuring the consistent use of project management and systems development life cycle across all areas of responsibility in coordination with organization-wide practices and consolidated IT project and financial management requirements, and aid in ongoing refinement to these processes. With their team, the Assistant Director will also plan and manage application design, architecture activities, application assessment and requirements activities relating to the enterprise applications.

The Assistant Director Administrative Application Services directs a mid-sized team of IT professionals who architect, deliver, and maintain Oswego’s administrative systems. 

In addition, the Assistant Director Administrative Application Services will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree at time of application
  • Progressive IT-related work experience, in either information systems or administrative areas, with a focus on application implementation, maintenance and performance.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, have excellent customer service skills, and be able to work collegially and effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in successfully leading application or project teams in an organization of relevant scale and complexity. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in practicing operational practices that drive reliability, relevance, and efficiency through service ownership and shared accountability.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the wide range of institutional functions that are relevant to colleagues supported by this role. Demonstrated ability to translate and provide expert guidance in the effective use of enabling technologies.
  • Demonstrated skills relevant to be a dynamic contributor to an organization that is in an active period of redesign.
  • Proven ability to lead through influence, consensus, and collaboration. Demonstrated prior ability in the delivery of medium to large-scale IT projects.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, negotiating and presentation skills, with ability to be diplomatic and highly responsive in all interpersonal interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, plan, carryout and delegate the work essential to achieve a strong customer service environment.
  • Strategic thinker, thoughtful listener, strong communicator, diplomat, and team player with unquestionable integrity.
  • Demonstrated record of success working effectively with external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Student Information Systems such as Ellucian Banner with a proven record of proactively implementing the base application and associated modules
  • Experience working in a Higher Education environment and a proven record of achievement.
  • Experience managing successful complex information technology projects that enhance the activities of the associated business units.
  • Experience leading and/or managing a team of accomplished programmers.
