Davidson College — Chief of Police

Reporting to the vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer, the chief of police provides leadership for a full-service campus law enforcement agency and has overall responsibility for budget, human resource planning, development, and management and priority setting for campus security, including short- and long-range emergency plans. The chief implements best practices in the field of public safety; ensures compliance with federal and state laws and regulations; prepares and distributes the college’s annual security report as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998; leads and participates on Title IX-related investigations; and directs, plans, and manages all functions and operations of the police department, parking, and safety shuttle. The chief supervises a staff of 21, including 19 sworn officers, and manages a budget of $810,000.

A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible management experience in law enforcement, including at least five in a supervisory role, are required. Candidates must possess or be eligible to possess and maintain a North Carolina police certification with the North Carolina training and standards commission. A master’s degree and experience in a higher education setting are preferred. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with providing leadership for a law enforcement organization, including digital/cyber security, emergency management, strategic planning, supervision, and assessment; expertise with Clery Act and Title IX; and the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with critical stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and with local, state, and federal criminal justice organizations.
