The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion (“The Center”) at Carnegie Mellon University is a joint unit with dual reporting lines to Division of Student Affairs and the Vice Provost for Education and affects the student experience by encouraging cultural engagement, fostering a sense of belonging, and challenging systems of privilege and oppression. The Center continuously supports the success of historically underrepresented student populations through developing community, active mentorship, and personal empowerment while collaborating with students, staff, faculty, and alumni to develop creative programs designed to increase and advance individual and collective intercultural proficiency development.

We are searching for an Assistant Director for Campus Engagement. This is a dynamic opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and challenging work environment.

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring a comprehensive and intercultural set of programs and initiatives are designed to raise awareness and educate the campus community; provide opportunities to develop community and network across constituencies; as well as model and teach methods for productive dialogue and discourse. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will also lead cultural competence, bystander, bias buster and safe zone training, as well as supervising student staff and/or interns.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and leading programs and activities in support of the Center’s mission; provide community building and networking opportunities across constituencies; and support efforts to build and implement equity minded change.
  • Crafting models and methods for productive dialogue and discourse; provide training and competency skill-building related to intergroup dialogue, intercultural proficiency, and active ally-ship.
  • Supporting the planning and operational processes to include budget management and program evaluation.
  • Actively supporting the general functions of the Center via routine staff meetings, participation in campus events and signature programs; assisting with student support, Center response and business continuity during critical incident moments on campus or in broader global community.

You should demonstrate:

  • Experience in diversity infrastructures with a steadfast dedication to equity and justice;
  • Strong understanding of contemporary multiculturalism concepts and issues, especially as they apply to climate and student experience in higher education;
  • Proven success related to planning, programming, and community development;
  • Experience in staff development and performance management;
  • Experience with summative and formative program assessment, including using data to impact program development;
  • Successful track record of leading projects in a multi-stakeholder environment as an innovative and motivational change agent;
  • Advanced interpersonal and intercultural communication skills;
  • Ability to facilitate presentations and address large campus and community audiences; and
  • Experience with alumni engagement in undergraduate and/or graduate support.


  • Master’s degree in a related field required.
  • Minimum three years of forward-thinking leadership experience in a field of higher-education related to advancing related initiatives required; substantive campus-engagement experience highly desired.
