New Administrative Duties for Six African Americans in Higher Education

Yves-Rose Porcena has been named the inaugural vice president for equity and inclusion at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. She most recently served as chief diversity officer at the University of West Georgia.

Dr. Porcena is a graduate of Emmanuel College in Boston, where she majored in economics. She holds a master’s degree in law and diplomacy from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, and a doctorate in business administration from Kennesaw State University in Georgia.

Paul Bryant has been named director of intercollegiate athletics at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida. Most recently, he served as director of athletics at Grambling State University in Louisiana.

Bryant holds a bachelor’s degree from Alaska Pacific University and a master’s degree in education from Urbana University. He is currently completing a doctorate in athletic administration from Northcentral University.

Walter Johnson has been named senior director of facilities planning, construction, and operation for the Long Beach Community College District in California. He was the senior building maintenance supervisor at the Berkeley Public Library.

Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and management from Jackson State University in Mississippi.

Donovan Coley has been named director of admissions at Tuskegee University in Alabama. He previously held a number of enrollment management roles at Fort Valley State University in Georgia including director of the minority advisement program, admissions counselor, recruiter, associate director of admissions and recruiting, and special assistant to the president for strategic initiatives.

Coley holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from Tuskegee University.

Dexter A. Bailey, Jr. has been named vice president for advancement and alumni relations at the California Institute of Technology. He currently serves as senior vice president for advancement and executive director of the Stony Brook Foundation.

Bailey is a graduate of Ohio University where he majored in journalism. He holds an MBA from the University of Toledo in Ohio.

Mitchell Shears has been named associate vice president for student success at Jackson State University in Mississippi. He will continue to hold his current position as the university’s director of Title III programs.

Dr. Shears holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication and a master’s degree in elementary education both from Alcorn State University in Mississippi, as well as a doctorate in educational leadership from Mississippi College.

Quenon Endowed Chair, and vice provost for graduate education at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
