In Memoriam: Maurice Wilton Johnson Sr., 1943-2019

Maurice Wilton Johnson Sr., the former director of bands at Grambling State University in Louisiana, died at Avalon Place Skilled Care Facility in Monroe, Louisiana, on June 2. He was 76 years old.

He graduated from both Carroll High School in Monroe and Grambling State University. He later served both schools as band director. Johnson served for 10 years at Grambling, first as assistant director of bands and then director of bands. Johnson also held a master’s degree from what is now the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

In a letter to the campus community, Rick Gallot, president of Grambling State University, stated that “as a musician, teacher, and mentor, Johnson impacted the lives and education of thousands of musicians from around the world. His former students have continued his legacy of success as recording artists, music educators, and well-rounded citizens around the world. Mr. Johnson’s life is a great inspiration as to what we can all achieve through hard work, dedication, and commitment to our fellow Grambling State family.”
