Carleton College — Assistant Professor of Physics

Carleton College’s Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, to start September 1, 2020. We seek someone with a Ph.D. and with a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts environment. A successful candidate will demonstrate the potential to be an excellent teacher who can contribute imaginatively to our experimental physics curriculum and create and maintain a program of active scholarship in any area of experimental physics with a substantial on-campus component involving undergraduates. Start-up funds will be provided. Our new interdisciplinary science building includes new instructional and research spaces for physics and a shared ‘maker space’. These spaces provide new opportunities to collaborate with students and faculty across the sciences. Moreover, our department is interested in expanding computational instruction across our curriculum and in continuing our contributions to academic civic engagement projects locally and globally. Research or teaching interests that intersect with a subset of these new departmental spaces and interests would be welcome.

Carleton College is a highly selective liberal arts college with about 2000 undergraduates in the college town of Northfield, MN ~45 miles away from the urban amenities of the Twin Cities. Our department of 8 faculty strives to provide a challenging and supportive environment for our enthusiastic and intellectually demanding students. Over the last decade we have graduated 12 – 27 majors annually, of whom one-quarter are women. The teaching load is five courses per year over three trimesters. We seek someone who will strengthen our commitment to teaching a diverse student body, and to producing majors who succeed in a variety of careers. We are open to applications from those who may not have taken a traditional path through physics programs. For further information on the department, visit our web site at http://apps.carleton.edu/curricular/physics/.

To apply, complete the online application at https://jobs.carleton.edu/ with a cover letter and a curriculum vitae, as well as contact information for three individuals who can serve as references. Reference letters will be solicited by the application system; these and all other materials should be uploaded by Friday, October 18, 2019. Please include statements on teaching and on research discussing your interest in developing as a teacher and scholar in an academic environment that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. Address in your plans how you will contribute to a college community that holds as one of its core values a commitment to welcoming and treating all people with dignity and respect.

Members of groups traditionally underrepresented in physics are strongly encouraged to apply.
