The Graduate School at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking an individual to fill the position of Associate Director in the Office of Graduate Admissions.  The person in this position provides leadership regarding the use of technology to support the goal of recruiting, admitting, and enrolling graduate students.  This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time position.

The Campus Unit:  The Office of Graduate Admissions is an office within the university’s Graduate School.  The Graduate School mission is to ensure that our graduate and professional students have a world-class educational experience.  The Graduate School staff apply a people-centric approach to recruitment, retention, professional development, academic support, diversity, inclusion, and student financial assistance.  Over 20 staff members work collaboratively with faculty and staff in over 70 academic departments to provide services and support to applicants applying to be admitted and to students enrolled in graduate and professional programs at the master’s, specialist, and doctorate degree levels.

Key Responsibilities:  Effective use of technology is a critical aspect of recruiting, admitting, and enrolling students.  As part of the Graduate School team, the Associate Director leads in the oversight and strategic planning of all aspects of the technology utilized by the Office of Graduate Admissions to consider applicants for admission.  Of equal importance, the Associate Director facilitates access to technological tools that can be utilized across graduate programs for recruiting and enrolling students, including leading the development and implementation of centralized and programmatic communication plans as well as assuring programs have access to reliable data for reporting purposes and enrollment planning. The Associate Director works under the direction of the Assistant Dean and Director of Graduate Admissions and serves collaboratively with a team of Graduate School staff to facilitate the development and implementation of strategies for recruiting and enrolling students.  A full-time IT Specialist works under the direction of the Associate Director.  In the absence of the Assistant Dean and Director, the Associate Director oversees all of the Office of Graduate Admissions operations, including supervision of staff.

Required Qualifications

Education and experience:  A bachelor’s degree with experience in the following areas:

  • Managing or supporting the daily operations of database and integrated systems within an organization.
  • Leading others toward the completion of projects or initiatives within an organization.
  • Working as a member of a team to complete assignments and/or fulfill the mission and goals of an organization.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of integrated database and information systems.
  • Ability to make decisions about prioritizing work including daily operations and projects/initiatives.
  • Ability to identify problems, develop, and implement solutions within organizational systems.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups within and outside an organization.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in different settings and with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to lead and motivate individuals toward the accomplishment of goals congruent with the mission and vision of an organization.

Preferred Qualifications

Education and experience:  A master’s degree with experience in the following areas:

  • Managing the daily technological operations within an enrollment management environment.
  • Providing direction to an organization related to selection and/or effective use of technology to accomplish the mission and goals of the organization.
  • Experience supervising staff within an organization.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of integrated database and information systems used in a higher education setting including student information systems and customer relations management systems.
  • Knowledge of how to utilize one or more technological systems for the purpose of recruiting and selecting applicants.
  • Knowledge of graduate enrollment management principles and practices.
