Seven African Americans Who Have Been Appointed to Administrative Posts in Academia

Thomas C. Segar has been named vice president for student affairs at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He currently serves as vice president for student affairs and information technology at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

Dr. Segar is a graduate of the University of Maryland where he majored in psychology. He holds a master’s degree in counseling with a specialization in college student personnel from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania and a doctorate in college student personnel administration with a concentration on teaching and social justice in higher education from the University of Maryland.

Diane Crawford has been named executive director of institutional culture in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. She was president of Diversity & Inclusion Professionals of Central Pennsylvania, an organization that provides professional development and networking opportunities for diversity and inclusion partners throughout the region.

Crawford holds a bachelor’s degree in applied behavioral science and a master of education degree both from Pennsylvania State University.

Carol Burton has been promoted to vice provost for academic affairs at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. She has been serving as associate provost for undergraduate studies at the university since 2007.

Dr. Burton hold a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Western Carolina University and a doctorate in education from North Carolina State University.

Stephanie Danette Preston has been promoted to associate dean for graduate educational equity in the Graduate School at Pennsylvania State University. She has been a Penn State administrator since 2009, most recently serving as assistant dean in the Graduate School.

Dr. Preston holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction in science education both from Xavier University of Louisiana. She also holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction in science education from Pennsylvania State University.

Shiera D. Goff has been named associate director of news and media relations at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She was the public information officer with the DeKalb County Police Department and the Office of Communications for the Chief Executive Office of DeKalb County in Georgia.

Goff is a graduate of the State University of New York at Brockport where she majored in communications and minored in history.

Adanna Johnson has been promoted to associate vice president for student equity and inclusion at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.. She has served as the senior associate dean of students and director of diversity, equity, and student success at Georgetown since the summer of 2018.

Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University in Texas where she majored in psychology. She holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Marquette University in Milwaukee.

James Harper has been named the manager of corporate and foundation relations in the Office of Development at Tuskegee University in Alabama. He most recently served as city manager for Tuskegee, Alabama.

Harper is a graduate of Tuskegee University where he majored in business management.

In Memoriam: Norman B. Anderson, 1955-2024

Dr. Anderson was the assistant vice president for research and academic affairs at Florida State University at the time of his death. He had an extensive career in clinical psychology, which led him to become the first African American chief executive officer of the American Psychological Association.
