Northeastern Illinois University Appoints a New Chief Academic Officer

Dennis Rome has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. He will assume his new duties on July 1, 2019.

Currently, Dr. Rome serves as a professor and dean of the College of Letters and Sciences at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. Prior to that, he held various positions at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside including professor, chair of the department of criminal justice, associate provost, and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. Earlier in his career he served as a professor in the department of Afro-American studies and the department of sociology at Indiana University, as well as in the department of sociology at Wilmington College in Ohio.

In addition to his professional positions, Dr. Rome is the author of three books and is currently working on a fourth. His most recent book is Black Demons: Mass Media’s Depiction of the African American Male Criminal Stereotype (Praeger Press, 2004).

“It is an absolute honor and privilege to serve as the next provost and vice president for academic affairs at NEIU,” Dr. Rome said. “I look forward to working with everyone to continue the good work of promoting the success of our students and to achieve their full academic and career potential.”

Dr. Rome holds three degrees in sociology; a bachelor’s degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, a master’s degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and a Ph.D. from Washington State University.
