Description of Responsibilities: As a key member of the Distance Learning Team, the Instructional Technical Specialist is responsible for assisting and supporting Instructional Designers and faculty with the technical aspects of development, revision and delivery of online, blended and web-enhanced courses via the learning management system, providing technical support to faculty during the course development process to create tests, quizzes, grade book and rubrics, and use other campus supported tools such as web conferencing, podcasting, etc. The Specialist assists with the day to day administration of the learning management system, and manages and disseminates enterprise survey results and will also schedules video production with direction from the Academic Videographer and conducts training workshops and collaborates with others providing faculty development to design and implement self-directed training resources. 

The Instructional Technical Specialist reports to the Senior Instructional Designer, and works in tandem with the others in the Distance Learning Team from the Division of Extended Learning, Campus Technology Services and Library to ensure a seamless and comprehensive support model for faculty and students engaged in online and hybrid course development and delivery. 

The Instructional Technical Specialist will remain current with emerging technologies and engage in professional networks on campus and within SUNY. 

In addition, the Instructional Technical Specialist will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

This is a full time position based in Oswego NY with some regional travel and evening/ weekend work as required. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • A BA or BS in instructional technology, education, educational technology, instructional design or related field by time of appointment
  • Experience using a learning management system as an instructor or teaching assistant
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing multiple projects and working with multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to support and troubleshoot software problems
  • Demonstrated skill in written, oral and interpersonal communication
  • Experience offering training and assisting customers in the use of technology
  • Ability to travel and work evening and weekends as required

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Prior experience with Blackboard Learn 9.1 (or higher)
  • Knowledge of principles of best practice related to online learning and teaching
  • Experience in Higher Education

Description of Department:  The mission of the Division of Extended Learning is to expand access to the SUNY Oswego experience through the creation, delivery and support of innovative and responsive credit and non-credit programming for diverse audiences via multiple locations, modalities and services. We cultivate collaborative partnerships and provide superior customer service to ensure high quality, lifelong learning opportunities. The office coordinates offering of a variety of credit bearing and non-credit bearing courses and programs for both nontraditional and traditional students at the Syracuse Branch Campus, Online, during Summer and Winter terms and at offsite locations. The Extended Learning Division is the home to the SUNY Oswego in the High Schools and Oswego County New Visions programs where eligible high school students are able to concurrently enroll in SUNY Oswego courses for college credit. Extended Learning also coordinates the offering of an “Intensive English” program each summer for students from around the world and English for Academic Purposes courses during traditional semesters. Professional development programs are available by contract, on site, or online. The Division is proud to have received numerous Veteran Friendly designations and provides services to active duty military and veterans online and face to face as a partner at the Jefferson Higher Education Center in Watertown, on Fort Drum and on main campus. We also provide services such as Testing and Proctoring, International Student Services, Non-Traditional Student Services and Room Rental at our Syracuse branch campus.
