Title: Coordinator, Intramural and Outdoor Recreation

Job Summary:
This position is responsible for implementing, coordinating, and supervising intramural and club sports programs for recreational purposes; and managing, coordinating, and scheduling the physical facilities involved.


Intramural and Club Sports (35%)

  • Administration of all aspects of an intramural and club sports program to include: training, leadership, mentoring and supervision of students including intramural supervisors, officials and scorers; preparing reports, control inventory and assist in managing budgets; and collaborating with Rec Sports staff and other departments to meet the recreational needs of GSW.
  • The ideal candidate will possess the following characteristics: value student development and foster a hands-on learning environment, be a strong team player yet work independently, possess superior organizational skills, and have a proven ability to handle multiple tasks, assess and set priorities; be an exceptional communicator, problem solver.
  • Serves as the risk management coordinator for Intramural and Club Sports.  Develop and publish policies and program guidelines for intramural and club sports.
  • Have a basic understanding and experience in implementing successful marketing concepts to include social media. Candidate must demonstrate ability to develop innovative programming to meet the diverse needs, interests, and skill levels of an evolving campus community.

Outdoor Pursuits (20%)

  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, retaining, supervising, and evaluating the student staff assigned to Outdoor Recreation and the GSW Challenge Course. This includes graduate and undergraduate students, interns.
  • Schedule and administer a diverse offering of outdoor trips, clinics, and programs for the university community.
  • Review, revise, and enforce the policies and procedures of the Rockwall and Challenge Course Manuals.
  • Create a fall and spring semester brochure detailing trips, clinics and rental equipment available to the university community.
  • Develop and maintain a website and social media dedicated to the Rockwall and Challenge Course programs.

Aquatics (20%)
Assists the Associate Director in

  • Recruit, hire, train and manage student lifeguards and head lifeguards.
  • Ensure that lifeguards and other staff meet the minimum qualifications, certifications and standards as required by individual job assignments. This includes ensuring that all staff members are properly trained in emergency procedures.
  • Develop, implement, publicize and evaluate various aquatics programs, including swim lessons, clinics, rentals, pool parties, aquatics fitness and certification/safety classes.
  • Assist director with the development and analysis of aquatics budget, expense projections, budgeting monitoring and payroll.

Assist Associate Director and Blue Tide:

  • Supervise the aquatic facility operation and develop the pool maintenance schedule including maintaining pool chemistry, filtration and chemical feed systems.
  • Maintain the highest water quality level, pump room functionality and facility safety, cleanliness and presentation. This includes completion of routine facility inspections and audits.

Field Management (10%)

  • Works with Physical Plant to maintain and supervise intramural fields
  • Completes in-season daily field checks and out-of-season field weekly checks
  • Coordinate with Associate Director for reservations of intramural fields

Performs a variety of related duties. (5%)

  • Game Room supervision and monitoring.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of student development and organization advising.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Knowledge of issues and trends related to higher education and student affairs.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in multi-tasking and working cooperatively with others.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Level Degree from an accredited institution and two years of employment experience in collegiate recreational sports programming..
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification or ability to obtain within three months of employment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience supervising, training, and evaluating student staff.
  • Experience in officiating multiple sports.
  • Certification in officiating one or more sports.
  • Experience administering large-scale recreation events/competitions.
  • Experience scheduling league and tournament competitions.
  • Experience with managing IM Leagues web-based scheduling and participant registration program for Intramurals.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Excellent planning and decision making skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with current industry standards and risk management standards for recreational sports programming.
  • Wide ranging experience with recreational sports programming.
  • Experience managing a collegiate Club Sports Program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution preferred.
