Five African Americans Who Have Been Appointed to Dean Positions

Claire Garcia has been named dean of the faculty at Colorado College. She is a tenured professor of English who first joined the college as a Riley Scholar in 1990. She was the lead editor for the book From Uncle Tom’s Cabin to “The Help”: Critical Perspectives on White-Authored Narratives of Black Life (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2014).

Dr. Garcia is a graduate of Bennington College in Vermont where she double majored in philosophy and literature. She holds a Ph.D. in English and American literature from the University of Denver.

Malik S. Henfield was appointed dean of the School of Education at Loyola University in Chicago. He has been serving as associate dean of academic affairs, research, and faculty advancement at the University of San Francisco. He is also a professor in the School of Education at the University of San Francisco.

Dr. Henfield is a graduate of Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina, where he majored in biology. He holds a master’s degree in K-12 school counseling from the University of South Carolina, and a Ph.D. in counselor education from Ohio State University.

Wendi S. Williams has been named dean of the School of Education at Mills College in Oakland, California. She currently serves as associate dean of academic affairs at Bank Street College in New York City.

Dr. Williams holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Georgia State University.

Nicola Boothe Perry has been named interim dean of the College of Law at Florida A&M University. She currently serves as associate dean of academic affairs and professor of law for the law school.

Professor Perry is a graduate of the University of Florida. She holds a juris doctorate from the Florida State University College of Law.

John M. M. Anderson has been named interim dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture at Howard University. He is a professor in the university’s department of electrical engineering and computer science.

Dr. Anderson is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he majored in electrical engineering. He holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia.
