University of Chicago — Lecturer, Committee on Education

The Division of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago invites applicants for a position as Lecturer in the Committee on Education (COE). This is a full-time, career-track teaching position beginning in the 2019–20 academic year. The initial two-year appointment is renewable with opportunity for promotion. The Lecturer is responsible for teaching in the COE curriculum, providing academic and career advice to students, and contributing to the academic administration of the Committee’s degree programs.

The COE is an interdisciplinary committee of faculty who currently oversee three curricular programs: an undergraduate Minor in “Education & Society;” a course track on “Education & Society” in the Master of Arts Program in Social Sciences (MAPSS); and a doctoral certificate in Education Sciences.

The Lecturer will teach four courses in the COE curriculum. One course will be an existing or newly-designed lecture-style course with broad appeal, intended to introduce undergraduate students to a foundational topic in education. The remaining three courses, one of which will be undergraduate-only and two of which will be seminars open to both undergraduates and graduate students, will be in the candidate’s area of expertise. Specific course assignments will be determined annually by the faculty Director of COE.

In addition to teaching, the Lecturer will also: work with the faculty director of COE to define and evaluate learning objectives across COE’s curricular programs and co-curricular initiatives to ensure that the curriculum reflects the latest methodological and substantive developments in the field; develop and lead co-curricular programming to support the academic goals of the degree programs and enrich COE curricular programs; participate in candidate evaluation, admissions decisions, and recruitment for the MAPSS COE section; co-author doctoral training grant applications and manage or participate in managing training grant awards; coordinate COE course offerings across departments for each following academic year and serve as the liaison with temporary part-time academic staff who teach in the COE programs, including guidance on syllabus design; organize field placements/internships for students; and write letters of recommendation and advise students who are applying to PhD programs or are seeking other professional placement.

Lecturers must have the PhD in hand prior to the start date. Teaching experience is required, and preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated experience in research and practice related to education.
